South Lyon/Northville Support Groups?
Hey Lauren,
I don't have a SG answer for you but I remembered I wanted to tell you this before your surgery:
Both times I was at U of M for surgery, the nursing care wasn't great. They were always busy and sometimes you wouldn't see anyone for a really long time. I had my mom stay with me to help me get up and walk because there was no way the nurses and techs had time to help. Also, they brought me regular jello and popcicles right after surgery. They don't offer sugar free popcicles, so if they bring you some, don't eat them! Just make sure to check your tray and ask about the jello to be sure. You can even bring some of your own protein mix in because they have a room with milk and stuff for you to use.
Also, bring a pair of slippers with you. They do give you socks with grippy stuff on the bottom, but after walking the halls with those I didn't want to climb back into bed with them on. And my feet were freezing so I did keep the socks on in bed.
They let my mom sleep in a chair in the room with me both times. Bring a pillow for your tummy for the ride home. Also bring a pair of pants with a loose waistband. Drawstring is better than elastic.
I think that's it for now. Good luck on finding a support group. Have you thought of continuing going to the one at the U? Also, there is Patti's in Canton if that isn't too much of a drive for you.

Wow - thanks for the awesome advice. I definitely plan on continuing with the support group at UM, I was just hoping there was another. While I am off for medical leave I can attend more, other than that I can only make the Saturday ones (luckily they are back again).
I learned my lesson about having family with you in the hospital when I had an awful experience after getting my gall bladder out at Providence at couple of years ago. I am a current nurse at UM (in the pediatric OR) so I am also hoping for a little edge. But I am surprised that they continue to bring food inappropriate for your medical condition.
How long did you end up staying in the hospital? I was told 3-4 days. If I am having surgery on Thursday, then I should be home by Sat or Sun right?

I used to work at the U also (as a clerk on the cardio floor), so maybe that's why I paid so much attention to everyone's workload LOL
I had surgery on Thursday and came home the next day, but it was later in the evening. I would think you'll probably be able to leave by Saturday if everything goes ok with your swallow study.
It's great that you already know what to expect after surgery. You have an edge over most people. That will just make your recovery even faster!

Hi-
not aware of groups other than Patti's and UMs. I had my RNY at UM (birkmeyer/finks) in January and I had a very different experience than Brenda's. Just to give you the possible hope that the nursing support might be good! :)
The nursing staff was great - very helpful and attentive. I had family that would come by, but I was fine when on my own. The nurses were prompt in giving me my medications, helped crunch up the pills, etc. The food I was given was all sugar free and appropriate. The folks that transported me and helped me with the barium swallow test were amazing, and I have a total crush on Dr. B and the anesthesiologist - they were great!
I completely agree with the slippers, and would add be sure to bring a robe for the walking trips.
Good luck!!!

I had attempted to start one last fall......and the good news is we are going to start it back up again.
It will be held at the Life Time Fitness in Novi in their community room.
I belong to they gym as a MEMBER and they have volunteered to allow me to hold them at the club.
I am finalizing the day and time with the corporate office right now.
I live in Bloomfield, and I am in and out of Northville/ Novi constantly. I would be happy to meet up with you.
