Trouble with Protein
Is anyone else having trouble getting down your protein? I will be honest here, I dont do any protein other then natural. I just cant seem to get that gritty taste gone, even the so called plain have a taste and they make everything gritty. What is everyone else doing, just going with it anyway? I am 8 weeks out and DONT want to lose my hair as well as my energy level is kaput.
Hi!
I had my surgery March 9th at Hurley so we are about the same time out. I feel that some days I struggle with protien, but more so I am struggling getting all my fluids in. Here's what I am doing for my protien.
Breakfast - Carbmaster Yogurt (from Krogers) - 12 grams
Morning - Chai Tea (Pam T's recipe - GREAT stuff!) - 27 grams
Lunch - tuna salad - 14 grams
Dinner - varies...... - try to get at least 12 grams
So that is 65 grams of protien.
The problem I am having besides getting all my fluids in is I feel like I am eating the same foods over and over again, and I'm getting bored with tuna fish and yogurt. I need to mix it up a bit and get some ideas for some variety!
Hope this helps!

hi-
I had a very difficult time doing anything with protein shakes/drinks and as soon as I could, I got all my protein from foods. Here are some things I used:
*Soup with LOTS of melted parmesan
*eggs (scrambled), sometimes with cheese melted in
*Hummus
*used dry fat free milk in everything I could (decaf coffee, sf pudding, ricotta - wherever I could mask it)
*ricotta cheese with parmesan cheese (about 1 ounce of each) squished together and put in the microwave with a little tomato sauce (adding the parmesan makes the ricotta a little "chewier" - like the inside of stuffed shells. You can do without the parmesan if you like creamier ricotta)
*canned chicken - not as bad as I thought it would be and very easy on the pouch, with a little lite mayo
good luck!!

It doesn't sound like you've experimented enough. I had to try about 4 dozen different flavors/brands of protein before I found some that worked. Then even when you find a powder that tastes good, you need to experiment with recipes on how to make it taste even better. You can't keep trying the same powder over and over again expecting it to suddenly taste better. There are thousands of brands and flavors out there.
Where to get samples
I came up with a list of about 25 ways to mix a single scoop of vanilla protein powder into different beverages and foods. It's just the tip of the iceburg... but it'll give you some ideas to try.

Hello,
I'm currently using the Unjury products, i.e. vanilla, chocolate, chicken soup flavors, they taste wonderful and they're not gritty. They taste like chocolate and vanilla milk when mixed with fat free skim milk. The chicken soup flavor reminds me of Ramen Noodles, I think they are very good and I actually look forward to having them as a treat. The vanilla is great also when mixed with fruits to make a smoothie. They have strawberry but that didn't work for me. Also, the unflavored can be mixed with anything and the best thing is that each scoop is a whopping 20 grams of protein. It can't get any easier than that! Good Luck!

I found that I really liked the Nectar brands of protein: currently use the Fuzzy Navel, Iced Tea, Lemonade, and their Blue Punch mix (can't remember the name). In addition I eat Pure Protein bars. Sam's club sells the Chocolate Peanut Butter and Meijer's has a variety of other flavors (they blueberry/strawberry are both very good).
It was almost a year before I thought I could get away from protein supplements. I guess I'm surprised that you're able to eat enough already to get enough protein in.
Like Pam said, keep looking. There's plenty of different options out there for us. Compliancy is key, especially in the beginning
Good luck and keep looking

Here is Pam's Chai Tea recipe...it is soooooo good!!
Protein Hot Chai Mix
6 scoops vanilla protein powder 1.5 cups non-fat powdered milk 3/4 cup instant unsweet tea mix 3/4 cup Splenda 1T. chai spice mix (or use half cinnamon and half ground ginger) 1t. ground cloves 1t. cardamon (original recipe calls for this, but I don't have any, so skipped it)
Mix all dry ingredients in bowl until well blended. Add 1/2 cup of mixture to mug and add either splash of cold milk or water -- stir to create smooth paste (so you don't get lumpy protein powder). Add 8oz ho****er and mix well. You can top with Light Redi Whip and a sprinkle of chai spice or drink it naked. (The drink is naked, not you.)
Recipe makes 7 half-cup servings. Calculation below is without the "splash of milk" when you're mixing the tea. If you use RediWhip -- it adds about 20 calories.
