Hello everyone - I am new here and I am scheduled for RNY at UM on May 7. I just got approval and they were able to work me into a cancelation. I am excited but nervous. I am on day 3 of the liquid diet - which I have an issue with. First of all it is not a "full liquid diet" as noted. It is protein shakes, applesauce, cottage cheese, and a few others. This doesn't include all liquids like I expected. I have several pre-op appointment this week.

I was hoping people here could help me now and post-op. I just found out about this site at a support group that meets once a months, and I am gonna need more often than that.

My husband says he is supportive but he just made bacon and pancakes for the kids at breakfast. I could just use some more people *****ally understand.

Thanks - Lauren

First of All, WELCOME to the MI boards!

Wasn't it great to get the cancellation.  I was given one too and than everything went so fast I didn't even have time to worry

I have seen lots of different kind of pre-op diets here and even none.  Yours is one I haven't seen yet.

My husband is supportive.  He has gone to all the doc appointment and support meeting with me.  But sometime he says thing that just make me want to   (I think he just likes to push my buttons)

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

Hey Lauren,
I had docs Finks and BIrkmeyer do my RNY in March of 06.
The program doesn't have you do a full liquid pre op diet, and to me, that's a good thing!

Patti Kuberski (who used to be the nut with the program) now has her own practice and she holds support group meetings in Canton.  If you look at the posts from about two weeks ago you can see hers with all of the info.  I really like her and would rather have her for a nut than anyone else.

As for your husband (DH).......go in to the kitchen.  Take a pancake.  Slather it with butter and syrup.  Then throw it in his hair and walk away.  It might make you feel better :)

And don't worry.....when you are post op we have some recipes we can share for protein pancakes with sugar free syrup that are actually good and not bad for you.

Post as many questions as you need to!

Hi Lauren-
I had RNY with Birkmeyer/Finks in January of this year.  I had a very good experience with them, with the program, and with U hospital in general.  You're in good hands!

Please ask any questions you have - I know that I had a zillion and it helped to get answers from this group, as well as from others who used the UM program (thanks Brenda!).

Did Finks put you on a liquid diet?  I didn't have to do that so am surprised to hear that you are.  I know that there is a new NUT, but didn't think that they changed the requirements.  Let us know what they're having you do and maybe we can give more advice.

Good luck!!

Welcome to Mi and congrats on getting a date so soon!  Your day will be here before you know it.
I don't know anyone at U of M, but it sounds like you have a couple people here that can answers those questions for you.

Don't be shy, we're here for you, ask away.

The 2 week pre-op Unjury diet (protein shake) is a new requirement. They no longer require the 15 pound weight loss sometime before surgery, instead the unjury diet is to shrink the liver right before surgery. So far I like the program here at U of M. I like the idea of the pancake on the head LOL. Thanks so much guys.
