Hi All,

I'm new here, and am considering weight loss surgery.

I've heard that insurance company's require 6months of a medically supervised diet, and I'd like to get that started before I talk to my insurance company.

Does anyone have any recommendations for the medically supervised diet?  I live in Brighton, Michigan.

Thanks!

Welcome Sandra............probably best to talk with your PCP to determine what would be the best supervised nutritional program for you and your specific situation!  You can go from there then with the documentation etc!  good luck to you and ask all the questions you can think of.  you will find people very helpful here!  congrats on your journey!

Hi and Welcome!

Most insurance require a six month diet.  Some don't require it for certain BMI's and some don't at all.  You need to find out what yours does or doesn't require.

The first step either way is to talk to you PCP about you weight and a weight lost program and have it documented.  I was able to wave the 6 month as I had been on and off many with My PCP over the years and it was documented with her.  I also had mine approved with the first request.

I agree with everyone...talk to your PCP.  I started off seeing a dietician for 6 months.  But because I had to wait for my hospital to become a center of excellence, it took me a long time to get the surgery.  I also seen my PCP for over 6 mo while I waited.

Like others have said, most insurances require the six-month diet (some more), depending on your BMI and co-morbidities.  I would definitely contact your insurance company and get a list of their criteria before doing something you may or may not have to do.  But you're on the right track trying to get a jump start on things.  Tina
