I didn't realize no gum chewing after surgery!  my friend who had her RNY at Henry Ford told me it is a no no incase you swallow it.  So besides the sugar free breath mint, are there any other ways to combat the "bad breath"?

No gum with the RnY, that is true.  I remember reading something several months ago, posted my MI forum regular Brenda, I believe, about her freaking out because she swallowed gum.  No NSAIDS, or drinking before or after you eat for a specified period of time either.  These things aren't a problem with a DS or VSG though, because a pouch is not formed, and your naturally function stomach is still there digesting gum, food, and even water with food!  If you don't know about the DS, check out my profile for some links to information.

No gum.  No straws.  No Nsaids.  I've chewed gum.  I use straws (can't drink COLD drinks withouth them!).  And yes, I've taken an NSAID here or there, prescribed by a doc with full knowledge of my RNY.  The problem with NSAIDS, is they don't want you to take them DAILY.  Can be very hard on any person's stomach.  I avoided them prior to surgery, so that one is not really a big deal.  But I had to have a minor medical procedure, after WLS, and was given prescription strength Ibuprofen to take for a day or two for pain.  I took them for one day, which I think amounted to 2 giant pills. I had no negative repercussions from taking them.

I know some people are very RIGID about the rules and some are not.  It's very important to follow the rules that your doctor tells you.  My doc did not say no straws forever, or no gum forever.  I'm nearly 4 years out from surgery, so do as your doctor says!! WLS is NOT a prison sentence of forever NO-NOs.  At least that's not how I view it.  However, you can't go into WLS thinking "How can I get around the rules?"  I don't know anyone who has done that and been succesful.  Not that I think that's what you are saying or anything like that!!!  Tina

I agree with Tina.

Pre-and post WLS I have dry mouth and a fear of having bad breath.  I do use lots of sf mints and now I do chew gum.  I swallowed a piece not too long ago and I'm here today, so I guess all went ok.  That's not to say that someone else did the same thing and had to get scoped or something.

There are sugar free breath sprays that you can use.  Shouldn't be too much of an issue for you.
