A couple questions...
Hi Everyone. I just got my surgery date today, it’s May 20th. I’m really happy to finally have a date. I was insurance (MESSA Blue Cross) approved on the first try, (my BMI is over 50), and I don’t have to do any testing before surgery except the usual pre-op tests two weeks before. I did have to lose 15 pounds beforehand, of which I’m down 12. I’ll be getting the Realize band. I didn’t know for sure until today which band I would be getting, but I’ve heard good things about the Realize MySuccess website for after surgery follow-up. I didn’t have a preference, just whatever the surgeon felt was appropriate. I’ll be having the surgery at Barix in Ypsilanti. Has anyone else here had their band surgery or any WLS done at Barix? How was your experience? I’ve only met my surgeon (Dr. Schram) once, during the group consultation in February. I believe I won’t be seeing him again until the actual surgery. Was this anyone else’s experience? I liked the surgeon and the consultation, it was very informative and the doctor was likeable during our face-to-face meeting after group. So, I was just hoping to hear some feedback from others who have been there.
(P.S. Anyone else from up North here?)
Thanks,
Kat
Kat,
1st let me tell you with MESSA you'll have no problems with just about anything you do/want to do. The insurance is a huge benefit to working in the schools isn't it?
I didn't have my initial WLS @ Barix but I did have my plastics there. I ended up spending quiet a bit of time in the hospital (Monday - Saturday) and will tell you their hospital staff is great! You'll get to know your doc a lot better after the surgery -- it's just one of those things so I wouldn't worry to much about that. You're in good hands, the only thing is you are a good drive down for your check up appointments and for support groups. Most need a good support group somewhat local during the first couple of months.
Lastly, I'm assuming St. Helens is the small little town between West Branch and Roscommon (if so I drive through it on the way to my grandparent's house)
Good luck and don't be afraid to post questions as you have them

Hi Sax. Yes, my little town is between West Branch and Roscommon. Most people have never heard of it. I'm glad to hear you had a good experience at Barix. You've made me feel better about it. I have been wondering some about support groups, and I'm trying to find one more local than Ypsilanti. A woman I know from Gladwin who had her band surgery at Barix has been in contact about starting a local support group, so I hope that happens. I'd rather take that drive than the 3 to 3 1/2 hour drive to Ypsi. I knew when I was getting into this, though, that a long drive would be in the cards. I love living up north here, but I can't say we're close to any specialized health care, for sure.
