Hey all you mid-Michigan folks -

The Crim Fitness Training program applications are now published and ready to be mailed in!
http://www.crim.org/adults/trainingprogram.asp

This is the 21-week training program I participated in last year in training for the half marathon I completed in October.  The first 15 weeks gets you ready to finish the Crim in Flint on August 22nd (10-mile race) and the remaining 6 weeks of the extension program gets you ready for The Brooksie Way half marathon in October.  You can do both parts of the training or just the traditional 15 weeks for the Crim.

This program WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!!!  The key is to not focus on the end, but to concentrate on the beginning and slowly work your way up to the end.  The first day of training is only 1 mile and you know you can already do that!  I signed up for the program last year when I was a mere 4 months post-op and had serious doubts that I'd ever really finish the big races at the end.  But I did it by focusing on the babysteps that got me up to the point where I could finish.  I signed up for the "Beginner 10-Mile Program".

So if you've ever thought about it... NOW is the time to get involved.

Pam,
Do you know if there is anything like this in the Traverse City area?  Or maybe can give me an idea of who or where to try and find out about it.
Thanks,

 tammara,
It's probably too late to start now but I've heard nothing but good things about the Traverse City Marathon.  Beautiful course (I believe up mission point peninsula) and good organization/support.  If I didn't have a memorial day parade the next day I'd be up there doing it this year.

I'm sure if you get in touch with anyone there they'd be more than happy to get you a program or with a training group.
Running is highly addictive and just a great way to spend an hour or two.

 Tammara -

You might want to check with the Team in Training program -- I know they have training programs all over the country, so they might have something close to you.  Here's their website

As for the race that Sax mentioned.  I'm pretty sure they also have a 1/2 marathon and some other smaller races.  So check into that.  I've heard it's beautiful!

Well Pam,
If I have to take care of this abdominal issue in the next few weeks I will prob. not have my breast reconstruction in Sept. like I planned.  So...I may be up for this.  I've always wanted to do this kind of thing.  Do you walk or run???
I read on your boss's web site the Brooksie fund raiser, when is that?  I usually do allot for breast cancer and Gilda's club, but may be interested in doing the Brooksie fundraiser, if I can't do my boobs in Sept., kid's are always a great thing to work on.

You should DEFINITELY do the Crim training.  I haven't checked the site this morning or talked to anyone at the Crim office lately ... but I know they are planning to do an Oakland training program along with the Flint-based one too.  It might be worth a call to find out what the deal is on that if you're interested in doing the one down here.

The Brooksie Way Races (5k and half marathon) is the first Sunday in October.  All money raised through that event is put back into health and wellness programs for kids and adults in the Oakland County area.  The Count Your Steps program targets 3rd and 4th graders with a pedometer walking program - it's going on right now, I think. - and that's one of the major benefiters of the Brooksie monies.  I'm in charge of organizing the Fitness Expo that's happening on the Friday and Saturday before the race, so I'm not doing the half marathon this year because I'll be took exhausted (last year about killed me!), but I'll probably do the 5k race just so I can stay involved with the race part of it.

I'm still trying to decide if I'm doing the official Crim training this year or not.  The Flint WLS Support Group is doing an informal training with members of our group and some nurses and the director of Hurley.   Jim, our group leader, is an official Crim trainer this year and he's volunteered to train us for free on Thursdays (Crim meets on Tuesdays) so a bunch of WLS folks can finish the 10-mile race together.  If you're interested in getting involved in that, holler and I can get you the details.

Even if you do the breast thing in September ... you stil have time to do the Crim race in August.
