OK, I'm really getting into preparing for this surgery.  I'd like to hear from everyone on what their favorite 'protien' supplements are.  Whether it's Whey protien powder mixed with something, protien drinks, beneprotien, or what.  How do you get in all of your protien needs the first month out?  I was hoping that I could use a protien water drink and count it toward part of the 64 oz I'll have to get in daily.
Thanks everyone.

I just bought a whey powder from Meijer and mixed it with skim milk. The chocolate was too "strong" tasting but vanilla was OK.  Don't buy the great big tubs-I threw most of mine away.  I can't recall even liking it so much as doing what needed to be done, and I got off liquid protein supplements as soon as I could. They didn't have protein water back then, but that isn't a bad ideas-you can use it as a "twofer"

Jani,

My nut requires "liquid" for the first 3 weeks to 3 months.  In other words, protein shakes (whey based), yogurt, pudding, sf Popsicles,  sf jello, mashed post, apple sauce...then you progress to egg drop soup, refried beans w/ cheese, tuna fish, chicken (in a can) w/ lots of mayo, cottage cheese w/ jellies, spag. sauce..., what ever you want to mix it with.
That was pretty much our 1st 3-6 weeks, as I recall, it's been awhile, sorry.  Just remember, everyone is different, and so are their nuts and surgeons.

I've stuck with at least 2 shakes a day (I make mine w/ Silk light chocolate soy, a scoop of protein powder and some frozen fruit,  I LOVE my shakes!), so that really limits how many other food "alternatives" I needed.

Good luck,

Edie

Edie,
I'm hoping to love the shakes too.  Today, against other's suggestions, I went out and bought a large tub of vanilla Whey Protien powder at Walmart.  I didn't think just under $15  was too much to pay for probably at least a month's worth of protien drinks.  I thought I'd try mixing it with skim milk and adding some sugar free orange jello powder to make it taste like a creamsickle.  I'm planning on trying it tomorrow.  I wonder if I could add some Crystal Lite to it too.  I called today to see if I could get in to see my surgeon any earlier than 4-22 and he's all booked until then.  I'll keep trying tho.

I've got to say that the first few weeks after surgery when you are on protein shakes only.  It SUCKS and trust me  I am a lover of protein shakes.  I've been drinking protein shakes for well over 15 years for breakfast.  Their easy, tasty and healthy... plus  I don't believe my taste buds changed much after surgery.  What bothered me was that my shakes I was making with water I now had to add milk too and they were soooooo thick they made me gag.

BUT after your induction to this whole new life, the way I make my shakes is Silk light Chocolate milk w/ a scoop of vanilla protein powder and frozen fruit.  They are wonderful (in my opinion), I can add fz Cherry's and fz pineapple w/ the chocolate silk it tastes like the bottom of a banana split. YUMMY!!!

Alrighty, here's my take on protein powder.  Every single brand and flavor smells and tastes like ass.  Seriously.  It's gross to me.  No matter what you add to it, it still has a weird "protein-y" taste that you can't hide.
I looked at protein powder as kind of a "medicine", just like I do my vitamins.  For the first year or so I used AnyWhey "unflavored" powder.  I mixed it with just a little bit of Dannon Lite and Fit smoothie.  I mean just a little bit.  Then I took it like I do all other nasty tasting medicines......I held my nose and swallowed it.
Some people can totally embrace the whole protein shake thing.  They do recipes and syrups and all that junk.  Not me.  I just wanted to get it and be done with it.
I look at my protein totals at the end of the day, and if I'm behind, then I use Vitamin Shoppe's brand of chocolate whey and mix it with sf hot cocoa.
Make sure you read the label of the protein waters.  Some of them have as little as 3g and some add sugar.  Extra protein isn't bad, but IMHO if the water tastes like crap then 3g of protein isn't worth it.
You may find you can do shakes, etc. with no problem.  If so, you have a long time to experiment and find out what works for you.  You might also want to go somewhere like Vitamin Shoppe to get the cold juice-like protein bullets.

I went thru Hurley so I had to buy a "kit" with all the protein Shakes, soups and cool drink and a fiber drink in it for the 2 weeks before and after.  The RNY kit cost less than the banders and I 'guessed' it had to do with eating after.  So I didn't really try out different protein supplements until today.  I realized yesterday I wasn't getting enough.  I had bought a big bag of EAS vanilla before surgery from Sam's club and some Unjury samples and unflavored a couple weeks ago.

I tried the vanilla Unjury and EAS today.  The Unjury mixed better but the EAS tasted much better.  The Unjury had a nasty metalic after taste/taste.  Neither of these were anything like the shakes I was using from BetterMD that Hurley had me buy.  The Unjury and EAS are very thin and the BetterMD were think like shakes. They also had more vitamins than the Unjury & EAS are just protein.

This is my limited experience.  Tomorrow I'm going to try the unflavored in food.

Thanks for posting the question because I have to say, getting in all my protein is the hardest part of this whole post op surgery.  I just can't get it all in !!  I know I am only 2 1/2 weeks out, but I am supposed to be getting in 60-70 grams of protein.

I agree, at Hurley we had to buy a 'kit' whi*****luded protein shakes.  I could drink three of those a day with no problem.  Actually kind of liked them.  I since have tried Unjury unflavored and Chicken soup flavored along with some samples from Chike.

I am going to try two things to help me...  I am going to take Edie's advice and get some Silk choc milk and mix it with stuff to make a yummy shake.  I am also going to get the ingredients to make Pam T's Chai tea.  People say that is soooooooo good and has lots of protein.

Edie - thanks for the ideas....I am going to try the recipe you gave in your post and see if that helps me get my protein in!!

I will vouch for Pam T chia tea it is delicous with or without whip topping.  You will not realize you are taking in protien.  I am going to try it iced one of these days.

Hey Pam... I just got a slushie making machine and I made my first icee last night with crystal light.  But I was thinking it would be great with the chai tea mixed into it instead.  Bet that'd be an awesome summertime treat!
