STRETCHED STOMA
This is the simplest (and cheapest) option for stoma dilation. It is an endoscopic procedure where we inject an irritating substance (sodium morrhuate) into the tissue around the stoma. It is the same substance injected into varicose veins in the leg to cause them to shrink down. The goal is to cause the stoma to shrink. It is done with sedation, and takes about 10 minutes. There are a few published studies showing it to be safe and effective, though it may need to be repeated in order to get the desired effect.
Depending on your insurance, the endoscopy part may be covered. Feel free to call my office or email me if you have further questions.
