They don't make you join a gym. They do have you set up an appointment with an exercise specialist. They do suggest you begin to exercise. Nothing insane about that

The exercise specialist for an eval has changed.  believe me... I was a little upset too, but they now make you join a gym of some sort.

YES,, You have to join a gym of some sort.  it is one of the hospital requirements.  No physical therapy (that don't count) it must be a gym, where you can get an evaluation done at.  So, Yes, they MAKE you join a gym....

I knew there was something wrong with this so I asked at tonights support group meeting (thursday 03/12/09). The reply was no they do not make you join a gym.
       If you still think you have to then you can call Wanda, Chantal, Annette, Dr Genaw, Dr. Carlin or any one of the team. They will all tell you they will send you to the exercise specialist, but they do not make you join a gym. Not everyone can afford a gym membership nor can everyone get to a gym. They do however strongly suggest that  their patients have an exercise program in place, not necessarily a gym membership.

Well, I am telling you that when I had my class we were told we had to join and I made a HUGE stink about it because we are low income.  They said it is now part of their requirements.  That the exercise specialist was not offered anymore.  They may have reverted back to the old rule, but when I was there it was required.  They told us to koin either the YMCA, Curves or a fitzone for women, because they were they cheapest places they knew of....

Again, This is when I went back in June.   I will call wanda on monday and explain that this is being questioned here and explain it all to her to see what she says. 

Oh Plus when I went to my 3 month appt.  They said that they needed to see proof of my gym membership (so if its not required why would they ask for that? )

Also... make sure the letter is heart felt, not just "I want surgery."  I can say it took me about 2 months to write it out and I cried most of the time doing it, it just came from the heart.  He seen it, read it and said it was one of the most detailed letters and he was pretty impressed with how well it was done.  He said he could tell I took my time and that it came from the heart...

I had my education class in mid December, but I did not see the surgeon until the end of January.  I guess that's not that long, it just seems like it when you're anxious!  Yes, I'm seeing Dr. Genaw also, I had my Medical Clearance appt. yesterday, and I go back to see Dr. Genaw on March 20th, I have to lose these 16 lbs. before then.  Yes, it is a lengthy process, but it's worth it.

I joined the YMCA and was told by Dr. Carlin to lose 15 lbs, at my next meeting with him, I had only lost 10, but they seen What I was doing at the gym, what I was eating and it was not post-poned.  HOWEVER, they have done it to some people, just didn't do it to me...

I guess the loaded question here is who is your surgeon and that will help someone that has been in your program answer your question more specifically.

My surgeon is Dr. Genaw, it just seems that he has a no nonsense approach!
