hiya

Did you all have to have a sleep apnea test done before surgery?  is it required?
I had one done about 9 months ago, well, half of one...I went the first night and they determined that I am moderate for sleep apnea.  I did not go back for the 2nd night because I couldn't stomach the idea of sleeping with a machine on my face.
Now, I heard a rumor that if you are diagnosed with sa, then the hospital will require that you bring the machine and have it with you while in the hospital.
Do you think my test will be sufficient or will I have to redo the test again?
yikes...I hate all that wired up stuff...blah.

I didn't have to redo mine.   My doc has me do it once every couple of years.  I should have it done this summer, see if I can get rid it.

The anesthesiologist needs to know if you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea.  Sleep apnea is caused when the back of your throat collapses obstructing your airway.

IS IT SAFE FOR ME TO HAVE BARIATRIC SURGERY IF I HAVE SLEEP APNEA?
Overall, the risk of complications from bariatric surgery is slightly higher for those who have sleep apnea. Individuals with obstructive sleep apnea who are candidates for bariatric operations should be carefully checked and diagnosed prior to surgery. Some anesthetic agents and narcotics used during the operation adversely affect the airway, worsening obstruction.

I would want to know for sure.  I would go back and get the test completed.  Some doctors wont perform surgery until you have used the cpap machine for a couple of months.

you must have misunderstood my question.  I know all about sleep apnea.  I spent many hours on cpap.com learning before my testing was done.  I had the test done, and was already diagnosed with it, but on the mild side..nothing severe.  I didnt go back the second night for the calibration for the machine, thats all.
My question was if anyone thought the doctor would make me redo the test since I already had it done awhile ago.    I've had three other major surgeries, I am aware of the airway problems since they talk to me in length about it because of all the fat around my neck.  Another reason to get this surgery and lose the weight.
