It sounds as though you are still researching WLS in general.  I would suggest that you look into the four major WLS options, and determine which would best meet your needs, especially how you want to live your life post-op.  Hang out on each of the surgery specific boards, including the Regrets & Revisions boards, and get an idea of what post-op life is like.  Once you know what WLS you are interested in, only then would I consult with a surgeon.  The great majority of surgeons only perform Gastric Banding or RnY, while some others also perform VSG.  Very few surgeons perform the DS, as it is takes a highly skilled surgeon, but we do have four surgeons right here in Michigan performing it (2 in G.R. and 2 in the Detroit area).

For information on the DS, please check out:  DSfacts.com
There is great information on this WLS option there, as well as long-term peer-reviewed studies.  This procedure has the best long-term results in keeping excess weight off.

Good luck in your journey!

Normal BMI (24.9)  =  159#:  would have to compromise my muscle mass to get here without plastics, so this is not a goal.

Hurley Bariatric Center is a Center of Excellence and was one of the first programs in Michigan.  Doctors Farhan and Wagner have both been with the program since they began the Center.  Dr. Farhan did my surgery -- (no, he doesn't do mostly banding, he does both RNY and band - the information on OH's surgeon pages are way outdated).

Dr. Farhan is the head of trauma surgery at Hurley as well as the head of the bariatic center --- he was appointed to these positions after Dr. Obeid died last year.  So you can be assured that if anything goes wrong during your surgery, he's well experienced and highly skilled to deal with anything that might happen while you're on the table.  That's one of the main reasons I wanted a surgeon who didn't ONLY do bariatric surgeries... I wanted expertise in many areas.

Hurley has an outstanding aftercare program with regular support group meetings, nutritionist on call for questions, a nursing staff who is experienced in bariatrics and an MD who is - in my opinion - the most knowledgable doctor in bariatrics in this area.  They also have Dr. Williams as their preferred psychologist (he also leads the support groups) and does a great job with the psych evals and post-op counseling and regularly offers group therapy sessions for post-op patients to get to the bottom of their eating issues.  You also can receive a discount on membership at Hurley Health and Fitness if you decide to join a gym.

There's a support group meeting at Hurley on Monday, Feb 2nd at 5:30 --- anyone is welcome to attend and if you decide to be there, look me up and I'd be happy to chat.   I'm the one who always walked in late... so I'm easy to spot.  LOL!  (Hopefully I won't have to work late on Monday and I'll be there.)

Holler if you have any questions... I'm happy to help.

Pam
