Help with calcium...
Jon and Theresa, I have been thinking of you both lately, were both of your ears ringing? Theresa, even women who did not have WLS, and are in those menopausal years, it is recommended 1500mg of Calcium. Vitamin D improves absorption. Living in Michigan we are all a little Vitamin D deficient because of lack of sunlight in the winter. It is nice to see a few familiar names and faces on the board. Carol
The ASMBS guidelines that were released this past summer recommends 1500-2000mg of calcium citrate supplements per day -- in addition to whatever calcium we get from food.

Check the chart that starts on page 7 -- it gives the recommendations for all the different vitamins to take based on the type of surgery you had. I took a copy of this document to my PCP and he was thrilled to have such an indepth resource.
Because I take Depo Provera - which tends to leach calcium from bone -- I've been told to take 2000mg per day. I would imagine older RNY patients should be shooting for the high end of the scale too.
Here's the calcium brands I use (I like variety):
Bariatric Advantage Lozenges (wild cherry only)
UpCalD - a powered calcium that I get from www.colonialmedical.com
Citracal
Also make sure that you're getting Calcium Citrate (not carbonate). Our RNY tummy can not break down carbonate which requires stomach acid. Calcium citrate is water soluble and dissolves easily in our pouch.
