Help with calcium...
Hello strangers! It's been a long time for me! Some of you may remember me. I have have a question for the "oldtimers" about calcium intake, especially in women. I had the RNY on 12/1/03, and am just wondering what the suggested amount of calcium we should get in in a day. I take it, but just not sure "how much" we really need to get in. Plus, I'm one of those "wonderfully-aging gracefully gals" that need to watch our levels
Anybody help?
Thanks!!
Hugs, Theresa

Thank you Amy! I was pretty sure it was around that, but I wanted to be sure. All my labs have been pretty good except my iron is a little low, which i know is because I was skipping it for a bit. So, back to getting it in. I've been skipping my calcium lately cuz I've been out, so I'm heading out to get some...just wanted to check on the right amount. Thanks again!!

Hi Theresa,
Can't answer the calcium for RnYer question, but did just want to make sure you are getting calcium Citrate and not carbonate.
Also, when checking your labs, you calcium levels can be very misleading. For the calcium level to start dropping you could already be in serious trouble because the body will leach what it needs, so that level isn't something to rely on. If you haven't had a base line dex scan done for bone density, it is a good idea to get one and track density that way.

~ I am the proud wife of a Guatemalan, but most people call me Kimberley
Highest Known Weight = 370# / 59.7 bmi @ 5'6"
Current Weight = 168# / 26.4 bmi : fluctuates 5# either way @ 5'7" / more than 90% EWL
Normal BMI (24.9) = 159#: would have to compromise my muscle mass to get here without plastics, so this is not a goal.
I my DS. Don't go into WLS without knowing ALL of your options: DSFacts.com
Thanks Kim...I do take the calcium citrate w/ D...the Equate brand most recently. Two of those a day, but not sure how many milligrams those are. I've never had a bone density done, and as far as I know, I didn't think they could check our calcium levels with our bloodwork...Mmmm....have to ask! Thanks for your input! Theresa
I have the same surgery group that Kimberley and Amy have and they recommend 1000 - 1200 mg of calcium citrate with vit. d daily. I take the citracal ones, and yeah they're kinda expensive, but try to catch them on sale if I can. I am nearly 70 and so far other than my vit. D level being a little low (take an extra one daily) I am doing great. I also eat a lot of cottage cheese and drink at least 8 oz. of ff milk a day. I think it is Bariatric Eating.com that is supposed to be coming out with a chewable, but haven't seen anything on it yet.
