OK... So I have yet another road block on my journey to RNY. I was nearly there. Two more months of weight ins after a year of jumping throug hoops and my surgery date was set for February. Then it happens. Two days before Christmas I get laid off from my company (contracted by one of the big three). I am in shock (okay not really). Most people here in Michigan are on guard. Ooh so close! Now I am in desperate need of not only a job but one that will cover my surgery. The economy is horrible and any job for those of us here is better than none but I would be so sick to get so close and not be able to get this surgery. What company covered your surgery? Thanks so much.

Stefanie,

I am sorry to hear about what your going through.  I went through this scenerio last year.  I was approved for my surgery and had my date all set.  I found out I was going to be laid off from my job and I thought that I was going to have to cancel the surgery date.  Although I was lucky enough to find a job right away, I was concerned about going through the approval precess again.  The other thing was that the insurance for my new employer was notoroius for not approving the surgery.  I did use the COBRA offered from my former employer and went through with the surgery and it all worked out in th eend.  I just thought it might be something to consider.

Best of luck on your job search and pending surgery.

I agree with Robert above -- COBRA.  If you already know you will be covered, why risk it?  Also, I understand Starbucks offers even part-time employees insurance that covers WLS.  I don't know the specifics, but there has been a lot of talk about it on the DS forum, as this insurance covers this often excluded surgery type with no questions.

I third the suggestion of COBRA. If you are already approved for the surgery, this would be your best bet.

I am not sure if you have family coverage or just single coverage, but if you have family coverage, you can elect the COBRA for just yourself.

I 4th it, if Cobra is offered it is the only option you have.  If you pick up any other ins (unless you go from a group to a group policy) you may have a pre existing condition, plus the other ins may not cover wls, be very careful and ask allot of questions.

Also, just as a warning BC of MI's individual policies do not cover any wls.

Good luck,

Edie
