Question about Gout
So I have a question for the forum, I have developed Gout about 2 weeks out from my surgery.
My family DR. and my Surgeon both seem to think it is caused by the high protein diet.
I was wondering if anyone else had gotten Gout or heard of anyone who has. My other quetion is, is this something I will have reappear going forward.
Right now it has been almost 4 weeks since the surgery and the gout is getting better I can actually walk on the foot now without a lot of pain.
Thanks

I have heard of this happening to some people in a High Protein diet. But have not heard of any one on the board .
Good luck and I hope it clears up for you

Don't know a whole lot about this, but my father had a pretty bad gout attack probably 30 years ago. As far as I know he's never had a second attack.
Hope this is your only attack, have heard it can be brutal. When I went in for a check up from my TT some of the pre-op personal talked to us that Gout was fairly common.
Good luck!

Hey there Randy,
Do you have a nutritionist that works with your surgery program? If so, contact them for some ideas of how to get protein in without eating foods that cause the gout to flair up. You might have to do supplements when it's acting up.
I haven't experienced it myself, but my boss (a non-op) has problems with gout. I know it can be really painful. If you haven't already, do some research as to what foods can cause you trouble. Some of them, like spinach and asparagus, might surprise you.
Best of luck to you.....I hope you can find a way to still get your protein and not cause yourself pain!

I am a per-op with occasional gout. It first occuured during my using the South Beach diet. And of course thats high protein. I first had it right after I had a knee replaced, and it was more painful than the knee surgery. I have a perscription for MOBIC 7.5MG. I take 2 when I first feel the pain and it usually goes away that day. If I ignore the pain like when I'm out of town without my MOBIC I suffer.

Randy,
I have had the gout many times. Some of the things that set it off are not proteins. It can be to much fiber, ice tea, green beans, to many salads in a row, snap peas. If I eat to much turkey (like Thanksgiving time) I will get it .All are very High in uric acid.
I know the pain, it hurts to have the sheet on the bed touch your foot. The doc has told me that my gout will get better with the weight loss.
I think that it helps to drink alot of water too, I seem to get over it faster.

Hi Randy,
I too had a horrible gout attack less than two weeks after my RNY.....but I've had gout attacks before, and I was on allopurinal to keep the uric acid down and still got gout. In attacked my right hand knuckle of the index finger .....my whole hand swelled up like a baseball mitt. Called PCP and he got me started on some medicine but it took a couple days to work and gave me diarreha (sp) ...it took forever for the swelling to go down, but at least the pain was relieved, and it took nearly a year to get full strength in my finger. Sorry to
go on so long......I've had one minor attack since, that was resolved in just a few days. I eat no sugar added cherry pie filling -- cherries help prevent gout.
Good luck,
Pat R.
