Genertic Prozac

Does anyone know about or taken Prozac?  I am 5 years post-op and I am now having some medical problems.  Some doctors say its related to my RYN and some say its not.  Because of all of this, I have some depression and my doctor wants me to start on a low dose Prozac.  I have heard  good things and bad things.

Any comments would be much appreciated.  Happy Holidays to all.

Robin,

I was put on prozac because I had issues when my doc put me on Meridia about 8 years ago.  I loved prozac and continued on it for several years.   There are other ones out there, and every one adapts to a different drug differently.  If you start taking it, be aware of how it is making you feel, not every pill works for everyone.  Some will make you worse.

Follow up with your doc for med checks to make sure you are doing ok.

Happy Holidays

Pam

Pam,

Thanks very much, I am just scared to death of medication.  I am very sensitive and if something could happen it will.    Right now, I think I need to try, things are not good and its taking a toll.  I went to the Psych a few months ago and he is telling me I have Post Traumatic Stress and I tend to believe that.  I was always a healthy person until now and had a very bad experience in the hospital   The bad thing...I work there!

Happy Holidays and thanks again,

Hi Robin,

Sorry you are going through this, but I certainly applaud you for looking after yourself.  My experience with psych meds has been that the absolute best source to make the determination of what you need is a Psychiatrist.  This would be an M.D., and someone who one sees not necessarily for therapy, but for their expertise in diagnosing properly and chemically treating you as an individual.  Chemically treating depression or any other medical condition should really be done by a specialist, and not a general practitioner.  Often times it takes trial and error with drugs, and also it often takes a combination of medications with several tweaks to get the correct balance.  My Psychiatrist is renowned in the mid-west as a leading chemist; not all are, so ask your GP for a referral to one with this type of reputation.  People come to mine from all over Michigan, and several people I know come from Chicago and Indianapolis.

What amazes me is how very different certain chemicals work on different people.  My mother's siblings (and there are 9 of them), all take very different medications for similar issues.  Luckily for me, my family feels no shame about our chemical imbalances, and shares openly about our experiences.

I don't suffer from depression, but was at one time told by a GP that I did -- I must be, I am fat and couldn't possibly be happy!  Really, that was the message.  I took the medications prescribed, and low & behold, I actually started to feel depressed!  As medications got adjusted, I went through a whole range of issues.  I could have kicked myself, because I knew better and have no fear of meeting with a specialist -- a couple months later I had a true diagnosis and had the proper balance of medications for my body chemistry.

Please, see a specialist.  Get the proper diagnosis, and work with the expert to find the proper chemicals that will be best for you.  Once you have stabilized and feel comfortable with your medications, there is no reason that your GP can't prescribe them, but you should also check in on occasion with the specialist to see if anything needs to be tweaked or if there is any new medication that may benefit you more.

All the best in finding a solution that works for you.     ~ Kimberley

Kimberly,

Very well put. I am not any any medications, but having been in the medical field for some 20 years, I have some experience.

That was some great advice, and very well worded.

Thanks, Curt.  I do wish that society was more willing to remove the shroud of secrecy and shame that seems to be associated with what is, after all, a MEDICAL condition.  There is no shame in seeking help in any area that will make you a healthier person.

I do get why GPs attempt to diagnosis and treat chemical imbalances, because they know their patients and so many just refuse to take the step of seeing an expert in this area.  But, GPs are just that -- general.  They can't possibly be an expert at everything, but are often the best resource at making a general diagnosis to steer you toward the proper expert.  If I had a GP that felt they were an expert in anything but the basics, I would find another GP.

Oh believe me, I am preparing for just how shameless they will act over the next couple days!  With the right perspective (and an IV of vodka) it can all be rather entertaining.

Enjoy the holidays, Maria.       ~ Kimberley
