not losing weight after 1 month after lap band
Has anyone experienced not losing much weight after lap band surgery? I have only lost 14 pds. in the last 5 weeks since my surgery. I am not eating anywhere what I used to before the surgery. Hopefully, I wil get my first fill this Wednesday. Will that help? Am getting a little discouraged after going through all of this. I don't belong to a support group so you folks on here is all that I have.
Thanks,
Larry

I have had the band in for 19 months. You will loose weight but not as fast as the RNY 's or other surgery's on the board
It well take a few fills to find your sweet spot. It's all up to you not to cheat and to exercise the way you were told to by your Doctor's
Good luck and talk to me if you have a problum

It is frustrating and thanks for always responding. I have been excercising. Before surgery I could only walk from the backyard to the front. Now, I can do a mile with no problem. My hunger has stopped...it seemed that once the swelling in my stomach diminished, I was very hungry. Now that seems to have gone and my calorie intake is far less but still no loss. What can I expect from the first fill? Will it be like right after the surgery? He's going to start with 2 cc.'s I believe.
Again, Thanks for helping out.

Follow the rules and the weight loss will follow. You might also want to check out the lap band forum here on OH. Good luck and congratulations on becoming a loser. Ann

I don't have much to add, not having had the Lapband. However, I understand the lack of support group situation. At our local one, there is not one other DS patient attending, so I don't go. I like to be supportive of others achievements, but it wasn't a positive environment -- just Lapbanders complaining about vomiting, weight gain, etc... , and also RnY folks complaining about the vomiting, dumping, pouch stretch, weight gain, etc...
I just couldn't relate to it, and had nothing of substance to contribute. People were obviously envious of my progress and lack of any issues.
I would suggest hanging out more on the OH Lapband forum. Seems like the best place to solicit input from a broad range of your peers, and read all you can about what relates to your particular situation.
Best of luck to you! I'm sure you will soon find what it is you need to do to get things moving in the direction and speed you hope.

163 lbs. gone! You must feel great about yourself. Thanks for the words of encouragement. There is a support group in my area but it just seems so trivial. Ever been to a Weigh****cher meeting? It seems to be a lot like that. I just can't do that anymore. I just want to know what I should expect and what I need to do. Thanks for your response....keep up the good work!

Julie, below, mentions the 'starvation' mode. Couldn't agree more. At least DSer's always report hitting a wall right about 6-12 weeks out, where the weight loss virtually stops. Funny thing is, inches change?? It is like the body is fighting the loss, but adjusting for more. Even on pre-op diets I experienced this (and it is usually when I said forget it!). Your body will give up the fight to keep its reserves, and you will start dropping weight.
Trivial is exactly how I would describe those support group meetings. Some people's issues were very real, and I understand and sympathize with that. It just got too difficult to be around. It was like all the people doing well didn't attend! I try to be supportive, but it wasn't the arena for that. A number of us that had the DS locally get together every couple of months. It is fun, and we laugh a lot. While it is completely social, and WLS hardly ever gets mentioned, it brings that close connection that you know you can just pick up the phone to call that person if something surgery related comes up. We don't have any men that join us, but a lot of the other groups that do this have at least one token male! Hopefully you can start to connect with some others in this manner. I do think that there are support groups like this as well -- I just haven't found any locally.

I also think that our bodies can be quite resistant to weight loss at first. I lost almost no weight at all between week 4 and 7 weeks out from my RNY. But, then the weight loss started up nicely.
I'm not all that knowledgeable about lap bands, but I'm guessing that there are some similarities to RNY patients. For example, sometimes if you eat too little, your weight loss slows or stops. Your body goes into starvation mode. You need to eat enough protein and calories to encourage your body to give up its fat stores.
Best of luck on your upcoming fill!
