My co-worker/friend's husband wants RNY and he was told that he has 100% blockage in one artery. The heart doc said that he needs to lose weight and to wait until after surgery to get it taken care of. Then the obesity specialist told him to get the blockage repaired first. WTF?? He is so mad now. He wants to move forwad but both doctors say do the other procedure first.

Well what the heck??  Did he say what the response was of each professional when they were basically contradicting each other?  It seems to me that with the cir****tances being so potentially life threatening that either one or the other would help him.

I hope that he can get things figured out.  Maybe he needs to move on to some second opinions.  I wish him the best of luck!

Sounds like his two doctors need to have a conversation with each other.  Make sure your friend is proactive with getting this docs talking and that each knows what the other is saying to him.

I can understand why neither surgeon would want their patient (your friend) to die on their table.  While the cardiologist may certainly want his patient to lose weight prior to surgery, for the best possible surgical outcome, I really doubt that he would suggest WLS PRIOR to the artery surgery.  With a blocked artery, how could he possibly get cleared for WLS?  Could the cardiologist have really been suggesting that your friend lose weight via diet & exercise?

Beyond that, if your friend is in dire need of having his artery cleaned out, he needs to find another cardiologist.  100% blockage isn't anything to mess with, and any good cardiologist would not send a patient away with instructions to lose weight.  MANY patients with this concern are overweight / obese / worse, and their is certainly a risk going under the knife with this condition, but the artery won't 'unblock' itself, and a good cardiologist will go in and take care of it.  A good bariatric surgeon, on the other hand, wouldn't touch a patient with a 100% blocked artery.

Yeah thats what I thought too. But he did say.."go On and do your WLS because I can't do anything until you lose weight." I told my friend that they were crazy and that the surgeon would not go forward with his arterial problem. I told him to see a different cardiologist. The blockage was found during is preliminary testing for WLS.

Hopefully he will take your advice and see a different cardiologist, because chances are if one is 100% blocked, there are going to be other issues to tackle as well.

** Now, what I am going to say is in NO way intended to start a surgery type war, isn't 'bragging', isn't meant to make anyone feel bad about themselves pre-op or post-op, it is just SIMPLY what it is -- facts and something to consider out of concern for your friend. **

If your friend is not considering the DS, please have him research it.  Why?  Malabsorption with the DS is 80%+ of fat.  As an example, my cholesterol at pre-op lab draw was 253; 3 months post-op it was down to 160.  I am always willing to provide any of my personal experience with the DS, and some good sources for information are the DS forum on OH and these websites:
