HAP/Henry Ford Hospital
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone had this happen before, I've been thinking a lot....I have my consultation on Dec. 23rd, then I guess, it's a date for the surgeon...anyway, has anyone ever been denied once they got to that point....the reason I ask is because there have been a few people that I talked to and I told them about my plans....and they replied "you're not that big" or "the doctor probably won't do the surgery". I obviously know that this is about health, but I was just wondering had anyone dealt with this. Also, since I made it this far through the process, the information about medically supervised diets....will that keep me from moving on? I've been on the weight loss roller coaster for a long time...just not necessarily always through a doctor, and I always didn't have HAP, so are they going to want me to prove this. By the way, I'm 343 lbs. with a BMI of 52...something.

I am assuming that since you are seeing either Dr G or Dr C you already have the approval from HAP. Correct? Once HAP approves you, the Dr's usually just make sure you are a good candidate and gives you the orders to get the bld draw, the amount of pre-op weight to lose, see their medical dr for clearance, ekg and chest x-ray. With a BMI of 52, you overly qualify. The dr's will work with you on your health and risk of the surgery. Does that make sense? Which Dr are you seeing on the 23rd? After that appt you will make a follow up appt and you will have needed to lose the amount of pre-op weight loss to schedule surgery. If you have more questions, make sure you join us on the HF yahoo group too. Good luck!!

Thanks for your reply. I think they told me Dr. Carlin, but no doctor's name has been mentioned, just when they initially told me I was approved. Okay, on the Dec. 23rd, I meet with the nutritionist and they told me about the book....so then I get a date to meet with the doctor? Thank you for the information.
I am not quite sure what you are asking? On the 23rd are you going to the 4 hour intro meeting or are you meeting with the surgeon? Are you talking about the Barbara Thompson book or the blue binder? I know so many questions :) I just want to make sure we are giving you the right info.

If you got to this point, you are fine. Like Tina said, when you meet the surgeon, he will tell you how much weight he wants to you lose before surgery. You are in GREAT hands with Henry Ford. Again, like Tina said, you should go to the support group at Henry Ford, a lot of your questions and concerns will certainly be addressed. Good luck on your journey, if I can be of any help, let me know. Carol
