I am considering obtaining a new insurance policy from BCBS because any obesity procedures are "excluded" under my current policy.  Can anyone tell me what they "require" for lap rny?  My doc can write a letter...Im just wondering about a mandatory "diet" or anything else? any info would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm dealing with them right now. With a BMI of 50 or over, you need no diet history. You will need a psyc eval and a cardiao exam along with a letter from your primary physician staing why you need the surgery. That's what they have asked of me, so far!!! Very good luck to you.

Thank you...I thought I heard somewhere that they had a 6 mo medically supervised diet requirement....I hope not...I have a years and years of yo yo ing but not medically surpervised in the last 6 months.  My bmi is 44 ....I will call them tomorrow and grill them but I just wanted some actual experience from "real" people!  Good luck to you too!

I have BCBS PPO and the six months of medically supervised dieting had to be consecutive and in the last five years.

BCBS has many types of insurance plans that cover different options.  Also there are options an employer can exclude from their BCBS plan as well.  They best place to ask what covers would either be your employer or if not going through your employer and directly through BCBS to call them for exactly what the requirements are so you have the most up to date and accurate informaiton.

Easier said than done!!  I am pulling my hair out!  Im looking into the flexible blue or Individual blue plan (no employer) and I haven't found anyone in customer service who can tell me what the requirements are....I seem to know more than they do and thats scary!!  Im going to keep plugging away though and see if my agent can get any further than I am.
