Hi Everybody, I've looked on this site and can't find what I'm looking for. I though some of you might know the answer. How do you know if you have streched your pouch out to much?Joan

Depending on what you start with will determine what you end up with. Egg sized bags will get pretty big. It can get to be almost the size of the old stomach but you still have the bypass component. Most stretch to about a one cup capacity.

I had a 3 cc elbow made of esophagial cardia. It hardly stretches at all. Four years and I can still get stuck and if I drink to fast it will drop me like a sack of wet cement.

Hi Joan -

You had surgery at the end of June... so you're about 4.5 months out, right?  It's about this time when everyone kind of freaks out beause we can suddenly eat more than we used to.  This is perfectly normal and you will gradually be able to eat more food as you get further out from surgery.

Streching the pouch is actually pretty difficult unless you have been abusing your pouch at every single meal for several months.  However, you pouch will naturally GROW over time and you'll be able to eat more as it expands.  At the time of surgery your pouch was about 1-2 ounces.  At the point of mature (about 2 years out) your pouch will be about 6-9 ounces (with a capacity of 8 to 12 ounces of food).

Here's a couple things I've written on my blog that might help you understand how your pouch works and why it's so important to follow the rules:

Understanding the Pouch
Why we Don't Drink with Meals

If you really think you have done damage to your pouch, then you NEED to see your surgeon immediately.  He can perform tests to determine if you have damaged your surgery and if it can be fixed with another surgery of if you'll need to adapt your lifestyle to a damaged pouch.

Be kind to yourself.  Take care of your pouch.

Pam

Thank you Pam for all the good info!!  I really learned alot about the drinking off your blog!! That is probably the hardest thing for me to do is not drink for 45 min after I eat!! The Chewing really well and not over eatting doesn't seem to be as hard for me. I need to watch the drinking and the slider type foods. Thanks again, Joan
