has ANYONE heard of this?

I have a friend who is just newly OHIP approved for RNY with Dr. Nunn at Barix in Ypsilanti.

She was told she will need to pay a fee for a nutrition coach and an exercise coach?

Is this something specific to Dr. Nunn or maybe a misunderstanding?

Thanks for  your help!

You may want her to check into that. I know that Barix offers a package that you can purchase with a NUT  and exercise coach who calls you but I never heard of that

I don't know about the Barix center, but at Hurley in Flint we don't have to pay any additional fees for services from the nutritionist, support groups or 24-hour on-call services.  We don't have an exercise coach available, but we have the option of joining the Hurley Health and Fitness gym at a discounted rate (saving $250 or something like that).  ALL of my post-op services are covered within my insurance coverage.  No extra fees.  I did not have to pay an up-front "processing" fee like many places do either.

In the book Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies -- they warn about bariatric centers who charge additional fees for services that should be included with the post-op care.  Basically they warn that any center who does this is not happy with the rate they negotiated with the insurance company and they're trying to recoop those costs by charging patients some extra fee.  I'd be taking a pretty hard look at any place that tacks on extra $$$ that is customary in other facilities.

Something your friend may need to note, I had my surgery at Barix with Dr. Kam.  Dr Kam left and I was assigned to Dr. Nunn.  He has a separate offices with separate staff and Nut.  His cards actually say Detroit Bariatrics.   It may be something he does, but not Barix.    I have actually switched back to a Barix dr, since I didn't care for Dr Nunn or his staff.  Personal thing.

Please have your friend contact Rachel with Dr. Nunn's office.  There has been some misunderstanding Dr. Nunn does not require these things.  All expenses for both surgery and post op care are covered by OHIP.
