what is a reasonable weight loss five weeks out from RNY?
I am 5 weeks out from a lap RNY. I had some complications-- an abcess that had to be drained. I weighed 267 the day of surgery and I am now 233. I get confused when I read of people with 50 pound weight loss in two months. I seem to be slowing down in weight loss. The last two weeks, I have only lost 5 pounds. So I am asking the question: What should I expect to lose per week from here out?
I am eating right, but I think it's time to start exercising. I am still on a wieght restriction from work, so I know that I can't do strenuous stuff.

Hi April,
Don't worry everyone loses differently. Alot of people have their weight loss include what they lost pre-op. If you look at mine you will see that I show I lost 17lbs on a 2 weeks diet prior to the surgery. Todate giving me a total loss of 44 lbs. So thats 27lbs since the actual surgery. Does that help you with your concern? I wish I could just go to bed and wake up skinny.........but thats just not reality. hang in there.

I know you don't want to hear this, but everyone is different!!! Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the figure you'll lose 1/3 of your excess weight in the first 3 months, another 1/3 in the next 6 months, and finish the final 1/3 up to 18 months post-op. That's the AVERAGE. I had a huge advantage, I was wanting to lose 200 lbs and am a relatively young male, so I did have 30 lb months (if that's an advantage???). If you're hoping to lose 100 - 130 total pounds you are just about right on target.
Better questions to ask: How are your clothes fitting you? I often found when my weight loss slowed I was still loosing inches.
Regarding exercise the more the better of course BUT it doesn't have to be join the gym and start lifting. Like KP always says, get walking. Find something you enjoy doing. I know I loved walking last winter: nothing like walking during a light snowstorm when there's nobody out on the streets.
Good luck and keep at it. I promise that even though you don't go to bed and wake up skinny -- it sure does feel that way looking back now!

I was told that on the average, you would lose .5 lb to 1 lb a day. Also, most people tend to hit a stall around 2 to 3 weeks post op, some last for a week or so... mine lasted for 3 weeks. 34 lbs in 5 weeks is pretty good. That's close to 1 lb a day. It sounds like you have hit a stall, which is common early out because of the major changes in your body. Once the stall breaks, you will see it come off again. Also, pay attention to inches when it gets slow as your body starts to convert some of the fats into other fats that you have already burnt away, so you will likely see losses in the inches category, even if the scale doesn't move.
You lose a percentage of your excess weight according to your metabolism and how compliant you are.
You will plateau at significant weights that your were at on the way up.
ex - My buddy Terry lost 4 lbs a day at first but he started at 670 lbs.
You are on track.
