Ileus - can anyone help with info?

Wednesday I headed to the ER with major pains in my right side.  A Co-worker who is going into the medical field told me it was in the area of my appendix.

Well after tests for kidney stones, ovarian cysts, appendix and who knows what else, a cat scan shows that I have something called Ileus, which is a non-mechanical blockage of the small and/or large intestine.    Laymans term is my intestines went to sleep and caused a blockage of bowel and gas causing extreme pain.  Apparently this can get serious if left unattended.

Has any one else had issues with this?  I was told by a very negative RNY patient that it affects most all patients.

This is my second time since December with it.  The first time was related to my gall balder being removed and the anestic apparently affects me.

They have no idea why it may have occured this time, which really scares me.

Thanks for any input

Hi Pam -

I'm so sorry you're having problems.  If you need anything, don't hesitate to call me and I'd be happy to help.  Hopefully you'll feel up to meeting the group on Wednesday next week so we can get an update on how you're feeling.

Here's a great article on the OH blog about intestinal blockages.  My understanding is that it's not a RNY-specific issue and that it can happen with any type of abdominal surgery.

Thanks Pam,

I plan on being there on Wednesday, barring any additional problems.

My doc tells me now, I need to be really careful.  If I have pains like this again to go right to ER and tell them I have had issues like this in the past.  I went from feeling fine to pain so bad I had tears running down my face in about 1 1/2 hours.   2 days later I am still very tender and on mostly a liquid diet.

I have followed up with my surgeon.  They are getting my x rays, ct scans and ultrasounds from my GP.  He is going to review and possibly consult with my gp to see if they need to proceed differently.

I am back to as normal as I get.  I have to make sure that I am passing gas and having a BM every day or so, but no longer than 48 hours apart.

Thanks for your inquiry

Pam, I am sorry to hear of your pains.  Have they checked you for Colitis or Crohn's disease?  I have Crohn's and this is something that has happened to me.  But the other Pam is right.  My surgeon says that anyone who has had abdominal surgery can develop a bowel obstruction.  Take it easy and listen to your body.

If what they told you is correct you are on the right track. But pain is nothing to mess with. It is a warning. Your type of blockage is something that normals and GAPS get but,,, You need to tell your surgeon imediately. He needs to be in on all aspects of your condition. I would suggest at this point to drink your meals. It will be easier on your intestines and will give you the protein needed to build back up. Isopure liquid ready made stuff is great. But do not drink it to cold because you don't want to shock your system. Please get with your cutter on this if you haven't already. kp
