Has anyone had dr pleatman @ poh,  for vsg?? Happy with him/hospital??  Our insurance won't cover this, so out of pocket for us.  wondering the cost, cheaper here or in MX.  TIA, June

I used Dr. Pleatman and had a sleeve done at POH. I liked him, although many people find him to be a little less than personable. I think that you should go to one of his information sessions and form your own opinion.

As far as the hospital, I was pleasantly surprised. I had a large private room w/ private bath on a quiet floor. It was modern and clean. The staff was familiar with Dr. Pleatman's patients and very attentive.

I paid about $11K for everything. I believe that it is a little cheaper in Mexico, but I'm not sure which doctors include airfare and which don't. Considering that you are in Flint, I think that you would be able to just drive home from the hospital and then drive down for your post-op appointments.

If you have any other questions, feel free to message me.

Best wishes,
Leigh

dietqueen put it nicer then I would.  I had a consult with him and I thought he was an absolute jerk.  I was offended when I left his office.  I wouldn't let him touch me with a 10-foot pole.

Hi B.B.B.,

Thanks for responding, and being so honest!!!    I know my family has been to a few dr's, who after looking us "up and down" are "digusted" to put it a nice way.  Of course we don't bother going back.  Is this what you felt with Dr P.?  You are the only 2 to respond, and are 180 degees apart on opinions!!ha!

I do want to gather as much info as possible, good & bad.  My husband will probably be first, and then either myself or my son.  We think they won't do people under 18yrs old, here in the states.  My son is 17.  We are looking into Mexico also.  Price & dr's are of course the deciding factor.

We are paying out of pocket for this, so have to be 100% happy with whatever decision we decide.

Thanks again,

June

No, that's not how I felt.  I just thought that he was snotty and condescending.  This was really a big let down for me because I was so excited to meet him and and get the ball rolling and then he was a jerk and I was mad and disappointed.

I payed out of pocket too.  Have you checked into Great Lakes Weight Loss?  They are out of Harper Hospital and I love Dr. Wiener.

Since you are self-pay I think you should "interview" as many Dr.'s as you can.  Who knows you might think Dr. Pleatman is the best one for you.  Different strokes.

Good luck to you and your family with whatever you decide!

I work at Harper Hospital so of course would encourage anyone to come here, which is where I had my surgery.  But I would also advise you not to base a decision on the surgeon's personality, but rather his skill level.  Some of the nicest physicians in the world are incompetent, and some of the best have really big egos.  Ask about complication rates, death rates, followup plans, future costs, his relationship with your PCP, emergency care and so on.  You don't need a best friend, you need the best possible technician available, and if that comes with a nice personality, then its icing on the cake so to speak. Of course if the doc is an absolute ass, then move on, but personality comes pretty low on the list for me in terms of making a decision about medical care.
