Your opinion please.
I have to call the doctor back today and tell them whether I want the open rny or the lap rny. Originally I decided on lap but recently I have been considering open. My husband wants me to have the lap rny..but I still think I may have open.
I would just like some other opinions and why you chose the one that you chose. I would really appreciate it. Thanks

I am scheduled for Lap on August 25 and in deciding for myself I spoke with a co-worker who has open about 4 years ago

Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought when they did RNY that they used the top part of the stomach anyway, and that was the less "stretchy" part of the stomach. In all the diagrams I've seen of RNY, that very top part of the stomach was shown as being used for the pouch. If it were me, I would ask for clarification. What part do they use in Lap RNY and what part do they use in open? I was under the impression that the same part of the stomach is used to form the pouch, whether it was open or lap.
I personally, did not have a choice in the matter. My doc was HAND choosing who he did Lap and who he did open. I had no co-morbidities and was relatively healthy @ 335 pounds...so I was chosen for Lap (less of a risk). But that's what I wanted. I would've reconsidered had they wanted to do open. I wanted the least invasive approach. And while surgery in and of itself is INVASIVE, I felt that having it open was inviting more risk (infection, hernia, etc), but I've heard others say they prefer the open surgery because the doctor can see everything. So, it really is a personal choice. I would talk to your surgeon if you are questioning your choices. He should be able to give give you some more insight as to what choice you will be comfortable with. Tina

I called my doctor earlier today to clarify. They told me that if the do open he can use ( I can't remember the name) this part of your stomach that is less stretchy and if they do lap they have to use another part that is more stretchy. They did tell me the names I can't remember what they were though. Thanks for your comment.
