Low blood sugar?

I've had a couple episodes of low blood sugar lately - 50 to 60 range.  Had no diabetes or hypoglycemia problems before surgery.  Has anyone else had this, and how did you deal with it?

I have this problem since surgery.  I was blacking out from it.  Make sure you eat on a regular basis, and you should not have a problem.

If you start having issues, keep a roll of glucose tabs with you at all times, or my preference, regular life savers.  Crunch a couple and get some protien in.  There should be enough sugar there to help increase your levels, but not enough to make you dump.

Mine was so bad for while, I was eating 9 times a day - yeck.  It leveled off, and I don't have an issue unless I go for over 4 hours without anything.

You probably should check with your doctor to make sure that is the only issue there.  They may want to track your diet and sugar levels.  Better safe than sorry.

Best of luck

Pam,

How are you checking your blood sugar?  Or do you just go by how you're feeling?

I used to check it 4 times a day.  Now I do it by how I feel.  If I get a major episode going, I usually test it.  I might check it a hour or so after to make sure it has come up and staying where it needs to.

Your doctor will give you some guidelines.  Each doctor seems different.  My Husband and MIL both have type 2 diabetes.  For her anything under 120 in the morning is great (she is 85), our doc wants my hubby's around 75 in the morning.  Not sure if it is age, doctor or if there is something else involved in calculating this.

Best of luck

Pam

ps my worst problem is no breakfast.  I now start my day with anywhey mixed in with my coffee and milk in the morning.  As long as I start this way, I don't seem to have a problem.

Before SX I was diabetic and it went away after. To regulate so I don't bottom out I eat like a dabetic should. 6 times a day in small amounts keeps my levels at about 85.
It is bad to run high and low on sugar.
I would suggest monitoring your levels and watching how your diet changes the level. It will require writing and keeping record.
Your surgeon can help you land the supplies.
Remember that naturally occuring sugars like the ones in natural juice will also help you control your levels.

Good luck.

It can get bad....I slept through the testing for low levels...after I drank the stuff they give you I told the nurse I needed to lie down and she asked me why? I told her so that I wouldn't fall down, what the hell did she think? My levels dropped real low, they would wake me up to draw blood and then I 'd go back to sleep, after I got home I slept most of the day until it was all out of my system....I keep a tube of glucose tablets with me at all times and that helps too if it drops, even if you have not been confirmed, don't write it off as just something you ate...get it checked out, because it is very serious.....it scares the heck out of my hubby...he is afraid I won't wake up when I do go to sleep...he keeps waking me up checking on me asking if I am ok...he says I get very gray in color and I do get disorientated and my speach gets a little goofy. I have told my boss if I come to him and say I need to go home, that is a very good reason why and not to worry....

Are you a Gastric Bypass patient?  I am and two years ago at one of the biggest festivals of the year where I work, one of our big events is the pancake meal with pure maple syrup.  I had gotten my plate and was working in the front office, eating and told my co-worker that the pancakes were kicking my butt, so I only ate half, got up walked in the work room to throw them away and felt the two huge jolts through my body, then I sat down told her again I didn't feel good and I needed help.  Next thing I knew I awoke to the paramedics putting a IV in and taking my sugar, at the time my level was 26, I had a grand mahl sezuire from my suar rising and dropping so quick, needless to say I haven't touched maple syrup since that day.  I dump whenever I eat sugar or high carbs and it is just a matter of how bad I am going to dump, sometimes I just get a little warm and other times it is so bad I want to go to the hospital, but know if I wait it out it will stop and my levels will go back up.  So, watch yourself with the low sugar, it is not fun and I know what it can do to you.

Theresa,

Yes, I am a GB patient, two years out.  That's really interesting what you said about the seizure, though.  Five years ago, when my eating was terrible, included a lot of sugar, I went to the grocery store.  My sister says I talked to her shortly before and told her I wasn't feeling well.  I had a grand mal seizure in the store.  After all kinds of tests, they never found a reason, and it's never happened since.  I wonder if they took my blood sugar there?  They didn't say anything, if they did.

It was a scary experience and after all the tests, they determined it was that my sugar was so low that it threw me into a seizure.  I was scared to drive for quite some time and still afraid that it might happen again.  I was so thankful that I was at work and not driving with my children.  I wish you the best and just keep an eye on your levels, I know with me I don't realize how much I do dump, just don't think I feel well and I know it is because of my sugar levels.

Syrup is one of my worst enemies...sugar free I can do, and my hubby says it actually taste better to him....So when I want pancakes or french toast, I have one piece and sugar free and so far so good....
