Conversation with a long term last night
I had the opportunity to speak with a long term post op of almost 8 years.
He has experience a significant regain after losing about 200 lbs. We were comparing surgeries and determined he was proximinal with a slightly larger pouch. He is considering having a revision to help him get back on track.
The part that stuck with me is he attributes his gain to drinking soft drinks.
"Pop did it for me" was his statement.
I know this is a touchy subject on all boards.
Aside from the sugar (he has a tolerance for it) he said it was a habit.
A post a few down from here discusses habits.
He said it doesn't hurt to drink carbonated drinks. He can handle the sugar.
So out goes the "you'll pop your pouch" theory.
I drank diet soda by the gallons.
Since surgery I stopped. That was the control point for me. I had to anchor that to make it work in my head.
If you've had a reagain can you pinpoint what triggered it?
Can you reverse it?
If you did counter it how did you do it ?- for the people that need ideas.

Kevin, I cannot believe we are talking about POP again. LOL. I stand firm in my belief that when the surgeon said that I could NEVER drink pop again, he meant it, and I have not had as much as a sip in over 4 years. I agree with you, pop was a bad habit for me before surgery, and going back to it would signal failure in my head as well. I cannot say that I have had regain, but I am an exercise fanatic, and know that if I stopped that, I would gain, because I definitely eat more calories. This is a lifelong battle, and just because we had the surgery does not mean that we cannot gain weight. If you do not develop life long habits, you WILL regain. Surgery is just a tool to help make those changes, but will not be there forever.
Yep.
It is a touchy subject but that is what he said. Pop was his downfall.
I'm hoping this doesn't get a battle going between the Pos and Popnots.
I feel guilty every night I polish off a twelve pack of beer. JK (not Jay Kahl)
But when I do have a beer it's stirred - one of Jon's tricks. There are just some things I will never have again and I'm fine with it. Like a lot of people I worry abou regain. I don't want to let my family down.
Excercise?????You are a stair climbing maniac. I remember the mall when we were walking and you were running the stairs.

My sister is 7 years post-op and my mom is 5 years out. Both drink pop. Both struggle with some regain. Are they connected? I don't know. But why risk it?
The thing that keeps me on the straight and narrow is knowing that all those fat cells are still around. They shrink and lost their stored fat, but the actual number of fat cells available for store do not decrease. I wll always have that elevated number of cells screaming for fat to be stored in them and I have to take the stance that I'll never allow them to return to their former glory. It is a lifelong battle that we must be diligent about every single day.
I gave up soda 2 years before my surgery, and it was never a huge habit for me. So I'm not tempted by soda. Pizza.... now that's another story.

The scale can measure the weight of my body but never my worth as a woman. ~Lysa TerKeurst author of Made to Crave
I am over 8 years out and have gained 50 lbs and contribute it to alot of factors. I am not a big pop drinker, a sip here and there, I don't know if any patient can pinpoint it to one factor. I know with me when I started to gain weight was when I was having marriage problems (stress), then came partying and drinking. I also know what foods sit well with me which are mainly slider foods, they don't cause much pain. There was also a hysterectomy and I am not getting any younger. So, for me there are many factors and the main one is myself for not being 100% compliant.

I'm with you ...I am almost 6 years out...I do not like pizza...if that is all there was I'd starve....I crave salty, crunchy....I do drin**** tea.....I have gained about 50 pounds, some of it my own doing because I got way to skinny for my liking...I feel good, but am struggling to lose about 20 of what I gained, just so I can have some play room, for those days when I just can't pass up the STUFF.....I walk about 2 miles a day..I know that if I increased my exercise it would come off a lot faster..I worked in a plant for one of the big 3 last year and dropped 10 pounds in 6 weeks when my walking increased to approx. 6 miles a day...So I will try and try again...I think the key is to not stop trying..and be aware.....Wishing my legs were longer so I could kick myself in the butt.....
