Detroit Zoo question

I'm taking my nephews to the zoo soon and want to do the Giraffe Encounter.  I looked on their website, but I couldn't find much info.  So, before I call or dig further, I thought I would see if any of you here have been.  If you did the giraffe encounter, could you let me know more info about it?  Was it "extra" or could anyone do it?  Thanks! If you don't have anything nice to say, you shouldn't say anything at all.......but then you'd never talk!  lol...kidding....

Wow, very helpful.  I didn't look in the right spot on their website.   $5 a person....sheesh....this day at the zoo will be a small fortune.

Take a cooler and pack a lunch and take water.  Aquafina is 2.75 per 20 oz bottle.  Lunch for three of us was about $35.00. $4.75 for a cheeseburger, and $5.00 for a personal pizza.  I think the souvineer shop cost me less.

It was an enjoyable day.

It also doesn't operate every day.  We were there on a Monday, and it was closed.  One of the helpers stated it was staffing issues.

If you go in the morning, take the train to the back of the park and head to the polar bear exhibit.  they are most active in the early of the day.  It was really cool to see them play.  We left that exhibit about 11 - 1130 and they were headed back the the den to take a nap.

I had thought about that...the train.  According to the website, they don't do the giraffe feedings on Monday.  Is there a spot to leave the cooler in the zoo or do you have to leave it in the car?  I know when we've gone to Toledo, we just left the cooler at a picnic pavillion.

I'm taking my brother and his family (wife and three boys), so we'll be taking our own lunches!  I'd rather spend the money on things like the train ride and the giraffe encounter.  I think we're going to have to go on a Saturday, so I'm afraid things will be really busy.  I've only been to the Detroit Zoo one time when I took my class on a field trip.  I've always wanted to go back and now that the nephews are all at a good age to enjoy it, I'm taking them!    Thanks!

I seen people with alot of soft sided coolers carrying them.  No real large coolers, except a couple in wagons.

If you go on Saturday, I would be there early.  We went Monday, and had to stand in line for 5-10 minutes. at 10 a.m.  I would assume that weekends would be worse.

I think they have wagons that you can rent.  I know they have single and double strollers.

I wouldn't leave your cooler.....chances are it won't be there when you get back.  You might have to  bring a wagon and cart it around with you.
