Hey MMPC'ers-going for my 2 wk pre-op

Hi all! I'm headed to MMPC wednesday for my 2 wk pre-op appt & I'm wondering what to expect? They told me to plan on being there from 11:30-4:30. What in the world takes so long if I'm only meeting w/the dietician, exercise phys., & the physicians asst? Is it a lot of waiting room time? Should I take lots of stuff to do? What about lunch? I figure since they're taking up my whole last day before my 2 week fast, they should at least spring for pizza . Thanks so much for your expertise!! Lisa

You and several other people who are having surgery around the same time as you will all meet with the nutritionist, the exercise guy, and the physician's assistant.   They each have a presentation and it takes a while - but I thought it was very informative.  After all that is done you'll wait in the meeting room, and each person will be called individually to have a check-up from the PA.  That was the longest waiting for me.  But maybe you'll be lucky and be first!  Also, at this appointment you'll order your supplements for the two weeks prior to surgery.   They'll have some bags all ready for you to pick up on your way out.  Sorry - no lunch provided, but they did have ice water!

I just wanted to add that the most time consuming thing for me was writing down the order for the 2 week pre-op diet with the dietitian.  LUCKILY there were only 3 of us so we were ahead of schedule.  I bet in large groups you'd have time for a nap.  Other than that it was intersting and the people were very nice.  It went quite fast actually.

And if you find that you like the supplements so much that you want more, let me know. LOL!  I have A LOT extra since my 2 week pre-op was only 10 days.  :-D  I still had to order 2 full weeks worth - or 140 pts.  (J/K - Trust me, you are not going to want any more than what you get.  By the time you are on 4 weeks of liquid diets, you are ready to flush the supplements and move onto real food....at least that is how it was for me.)

Good Luck!

Yummy, huh?! I actually have a ton of product left from the 6 mo pre-op diet I had to be on & cheated on every week from wk 3 on. That was a tough one! I called today & they said to just make a list of what I already have & she'll let me know if I need anything else. Did you have to do JUST liquids for 4 weeks-no bars, soy nuts or anything???

The two week pre-op selections include the soy nuts, bars, wafers, etc.  That afternoon, they'll also give you another order form for the two week post-op diet.  The two week post-op selections have to be all liquids - no bars, wafers, nuts, etc.

You are the supplement Goddess!! 6 months on it??!! You Rock!! Well, I'll just say I considered doing just the diet, but knew I needed something permanent. I am SO happy now that I chose the surgery!!

I actually didn't mind the pre-op part so maybe the weight loss diet wouldn't have been so bad. My taste buds and sense of smell has changed since surgery. I swear I can smell whey protein at 20 paces. If it were an illegal narcotic, I could easily put a few dogs out of business.

I've tried pinching my nose while drinking (which I have never had to do in my life) .  I can't even get it down that way because my ears pop.

Thankfully the 6 -12 week post op diet plan says not to use supplements - only as a evening snack.  Darn!  I was SO hoping to have to use all the chicken soup and boullion up.  NOT!

I had to do a 6 month "weight mgmt program" for insurance before they would consider me for surgery. I was supposed to be on product only for 12 weeks & then you transition into reg food(along w/product). Who the heck can stay on product after they've had a taste of real food??? That was my problem-at 3 weeks into the program, we had a bday party, it was fall(comfort foods and all), & I had no will power. From then on I struggled to stay on product, but I kept ordering the same amt every week thinking I'd get back on track-never happened. I gave a bunch away to some people at 1 of the group meetings but kept my "favorites". I have 7 boxes of chili, yes, I said 7, among other things. How did you do the chicken broth? I thought it tasted like Pledge. The vanilla pudding tastes like penicillan. YUK!  Thank God for the bars, soy nuts/snacks, & the shakes-I liked the fruity drinks too but you have to shake the doodoo outta them so they're not gritty. These 2 weeks are going to be tough but I'm motivated & I've waited long enough for surgery, I don't want to screw up my chance of having it. I've been running the house out of groceries & I sat down w/my kids & let them make out the grocery list for the next 2 weeks(my hubby will eat anything). They actually did really well-only a few things that I had to say no to because I would be too tempted to eat them. I'm trying to keep lunches & dinners easy so my older 2 can make their own lunches to help keep me out of the kitchen so much & if I'm having a tough time, my hubby can handle making dinner. They're on their own post-op for a couple of weeks!

Yup - the broth is the worse.  I mixed it with as little water as possible there at the end just to get it down.  Luckily you don't have to worry about drinking w/ meals prior to surgery and I could flu**** down.  I tried different things too.  I mixed in l/f s cream, all kinds of seasoning, mixed in tomato soup and added crackers.  NOTHING helped.

One thing I found VERY helpful - and use it still - is baby formula mixers for blending powder drinks.  They do a great job (as long as you don't do it in a full 32 oz cup.  In a glass it is great.)  I use my babies' mixer all the time.  I used it for soups too.

I actually like the chili yet, so if I had an over abundance it wouldn't be bad.  I think I have 3 pkgs left.  I also have oatmeal, cr chix soup, jello, drinks, puddings (of all flavors - I do not like sweet stuff like that often and forget about using them for drinks.  I need to do that.)  I do like the bars and will use them to keep in the diaper bag for when I am running around.

Have fun tomorrow!!

Gwen
