Hi!  I am going to Hurley for the procedures. It has been a long ordeal with insurance...since March.  I have Dr. Farhan for the hernias and I chose Dr. Alghanem for the plastics.  I am very comfortable with both doctors.  First time impressions mean alot.  I have two hernias and the one around my belly button pushing it off to the right side.  I also have an old gall bladder scar, and the skin under that has to removed because it will die and cause problems.  I won't have a belly button when it is all done, but who needs one anyways.  I lost 84 lbs in 2005 and have kept it off since but that was the hold up with my insurance company.  They wanted 100 lbs. off and I just couldn't get there.  I told them i was happy with the way i looked but wouldn't be with anymore weight loss.  i was told I would probably lose another 10 - 15 lbs. more from the surgery.  It took an appeal and a phone conference with BCBS and a lot of prayers.  I go for my second consult with Dr. Alghanem on July 21st.  I am going for the surgery in the first two weeks of August.  Now I am scared!!  I have faith everything will go okay it's just scary and not knowing what to expect.  I did real well with gastric and I had open RYN.  I am going to be cut from here to there but the end result should help.  Right now my hernias are painful and cause problems and the excess skin speaks for itself.  i know i won't be a super model but that wasn't my intentions.  I think they should spend a little more time on the skin issues before surgery.  You don't realize how it is going to be and if you can't pay out of your pocket for these surgeries it's not fun.  I have batwing arms and my legs jiggle a little now but I can live with that.  The backaches, hanging skin , the way you fell sitting - like you are three fold that is what bothers me most.  Sleeping is not fun either... if you can.  I have to prop my belly for sleep.  Well you are probably all aware of these side effects.  I know it is going to be painful , I was just wanting to here experiences from others. Thanks for responding and hope to here more from you.  Cindy

I had my work done there....the RNY went beautiful and my stay was wonderful. As for the TT and the repair...that's a whole different story.  They will not put you back on the bariatric floor and that means you will end up where there is room. I ended up on a orthapedic floor and everyone kept asking me what bone was broken I was livid by the time I left there...I even made them discharge me a day early because the quality of help was so poor. My bed was broken and the aide tried to tell me I did not know what I was talking about. I hope this does not happen to anyone else that goes to herley and I wish you luck ....and you really don't need a BB if they ask...they dont look that great when they are  not real~ let me know how it goes but talk to the Dr's and see if you can avoid any issues before your surgery....even if you ask for a private room for a few nights...it would be worth it....My biggest treat is when the girl in the next bed and the nurse got into a fight and started hiting eachother...Dont forget to bring your own pillow for the ride home. Good luck Maria if you need anything, please let me know... Dr Farhan knows who I am..tell him you spoke to the woman that had the huge hernia....it took 3 dr's and 5.5 hours to put Mimi ( I named her..lol) back in place...

I just had hernia repair, tummy tuck, panniculectomy, sternum scraping (I've had an excess growth of cartilage there for the last 30 yrs) and muscle reconstruction done on June 30th.  I had both a vertical and horizontal cut. Surgery took about 5 hours. They also fixed an old hernia (took out the 6in x 8 in piece of mesh from a lower hernia and replaced it with my own tissue.  My PS doesn't believe in using mesh as it's a foreign object and it's not alive. By replacing it with my own tissue, it will reconnect to the surrounding tissue and continue to "grow" as part of me. (Sorry, I can't word it as well as the Doctor did). If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me. Maryann Good luck to you
