Hello All, Has anyone out there decided to self pay for their RNY surgery? If so, did your insurance company cover any complications? What kind of complications have folks seen? Are complications usually a lot of $$$? I'm wondering if I can self fund the RNY surgery, and then bank roll the complications.  I'm just really afraid to do this, since I don't know how expensive this could potentially be.  I was wondering what other peoples experiences with this have been.  Is this a bad idea??? I appreciate any feedback! Thanks! -Sandra (From Brighton, Mich)

I don't know how to respond but to tell you that I was a self pay. My insurance had a clause that did not cover bariatric surgery even with some of the co-morbidities that I had. I was a self pay who ended up with major complications. Since my insurance did not cover the surgery, they would not cover the complications and anything in the future that happens, they stall payment and try to prove that it was related to the surgery just so they don't have to pay. My surgery was to cost about 25,000. My complications cost 1,235,000.00. I am not lying about this: actually under-estimating the amount since I still have things that insurance throws back at me. I would suggest trying and fighting your insurance to the appeal level, get a lawyer involved. Maybe buy some other insurance that will cover the procedure and go through the 6 months or however long waiting period they have. I wish I would have done that. I never thought I would have had the type and amount of problems I had. wigglypoo
