Another MMPC ?? Birth Control
Ok-I was told, by Dr Gawel, that we're required to sign a contract stating that we'll be on 2 forms of birth control for at least 18 months after surgery. Was this told to everyone? Is it true or is it just another scare tactic of Dr Gawel's? I just found out that my insurance doesn't cover birth control & paying $500++ out of pocket right now is out of the question. I know there are cheaper methods of bc out there but they're not considered safe for my age/weight factor. So, besides condoms, which will be 1 of the 2 forms I'll be using, any suggestions? Would I be able to get by w/natural family planning as my other choice? I should also say, that I absolutely, positively know how important it is that I don't get pregnant within the 18 mos & am definately trying to figure out a way to make sure I don't but my surgery is getting closer & I'm in panic mode to get this taken care of! Thank you!!!!
Even I was told by Dr. Gawel about the birth control. What a laugh -- I was 68 when I had WLS last year and obviously am way past menopause. I don't think she's trying to scare you, but it is very important for your health and safety not to get pregnant for at least 1 1/2 yrs after your surgery. The staff at MMPC/Mich. Wt. Loss are some of the finest folks I've ever met and they are there to help you and have only your best interest at heart.
I think your plans for b.c. sound like they would work. Just keep track of your cycle and the days when you are the most likely to conceive and you'll be ok.
Good luck and this WLS will change your life for the best!

Done! Your Ticker:

I would say you're using contraceptive foam as your other choice. What would they do if your religious beliefs did not allow you to use artificial birth control? I would think they would be sued for not allowing you to have the surgery based on something that would compromise your beliefs. Try throwing that at them and see what they say.
Or say you're using abstinence and see if that flies!
I have used the film in the past, but I don't care for it. Its about 2x2 size, not bad, corners on it tended to poke me a little when it would be inserted, but then it just "melts" with your body heat and your good to go... But it would work to tell them that you use them and condoms or the foam even....
have a good day, best wishes :)

This is really an interesting point that they are bringing up the act of birth control after having some from of weight control surgery. I don't know how to take this. I do know many people who were unable to conceive prior to surgery who did end up after surgery pregnant before they were ready to be pregnant" a difference of opinion if this is a good or bad thing. IO almost don't know how they can have you sign a contract, unless this is some kind of thing they have worked out with some of the insurance companies, and again, this is just a thought, nothing I know, just a thought, I personally, consider a child a blessing,. although, my husband had a vasectomy years ago and if I became pregnant, It would not be a good thing" totally unlikely but not a good thing.
I assume, it is a view point of their office as to how they view different situations but, again, just my opinion, and if that policy had been in affect when I was a pre- patient, I dont know if I would have signed it,
Interesteding thought though.

I also don't understand at why you would HAVE to take birth control if your husband had a vasectomy.... Just a thought... I would mention it to your dr....
