Ok I am having the VSG at MMPC and they have support meetings once a months but are 1 1/2 hr drive one way.  I did my supervised diet at local hospital, Ingham Regional Medical Center, and they have the support meetings once a week and 10 minutes away.  The only thing is the only type of WLS they do is RNY so all their people are RNYers.  I really havent done much research on this surgery since I can't have it.  My question is will it benefit me to attend their meetings.  I dont mind driving to MMPC in the summer but definitely will not do in the winter time.  Thanks for any advise.

Yes, I think it would be of GREAT benefit to attend the closer support group meetings.  Just being in the same room with dozens of people who are going through your same struggles seems to make life easier and puts things into perspective.   You might need to do a bit of research on RNY to famliarize yourself with the differences between RNY and VSG -- so when information is presented you can adjust the way you view that information and use it.  But a lot of the mental stuff - struggles with food and emotional triggers, as well as the exercise stuff will apply no matter what type of surgery you had. OH is great and all... but there's really nothing that can compare to in-person support groups and I highly recommend going to as many as you can.  (I below to 3 different groups) Pam
