I would love some more information on this.  My hubby is looking into getting banded, and Saginaw would be great.

The Saginaw program is relatively new, from what I understand.  Here are some things you'll want to ask when you call: ** how long have they been doing bariatric surgeries ** who is the doctors/surgeons and what is their experience, mortality rates, complication rates ** how many surgeries have each surgeon performed (if it's under 200, then run the other way) ** do they accept insurance yet or are they still too new to be approved for that? ** what is their aftercare program like, do they have nutritionists on staff, nurses, medical doctors, psychologists? I'm alway leary of any NEW bariatric program.  I would prefer to go to some place that has a LOT of experience under their bests.  This is my life we're talking about, I don't want to be anybody's guinue pig. Just some thoughts... Pam

Just some thoughts... Pam That's why I asked the question.  I always do research on my own but for a quick idea I  was seeing if anyone knew anything about the doctors and the program. As for your 200+ rule. As of right now Dr. Farhan is my surgeon and it looks like you used him for RNY.  Dr Farhan only did 174 lapbands. What you think of him and do you think he would still be viable to do the band?  I met with him and he seems good.  But talk is one thing and experience is another.

Dr. Farhan did my RNY.  He's been with the Hurley program since the beginning (about 10 years ago).  If you're looking at his statistics from his profile page here on OH, then that is WAY outdated.  I don't think Hurley has updated the information on any of their surgeons in about 3 or 4 years.  If you want to know how many LapBand's Dr. Farhan has done, give Hurley a call and ask.   I would actually give more weight to how many RNY surgeries a doctor has done to get a gage of his experience.  The RNY is much more difficult than the Band, so if a surgeon is proficient in the RNY, then the Band should be a breeze for him.   HTH Pam

Thank you.  I am pretty set on using Farhan.  If there was a experienced surgeon in Saginaw I might be willing to switch.

But then again, 50 minutes ain't that bad of a drive.

Hurley has their next support group meeting on Monday at 5:30.  I'll be there as soon as I can after work (I'm the dork who walks in late all the time).  So if you'd like to check it out, there's always room for more!  This month I think they are planning to split the group into two based on surgery type, so you'll have a better opportunity to ask questions related specifically to which surgery you want. Hope to see you there! Pam
