Dr Chengelis did my surgery through Beaumont and I have nothing but praises for him and the hospital.  I cant find his direct office number but with him I dont think you have to go thru that weight loss diet they try to make you do thru Dr Krausse.  Call Beaumont info line and ask for he office number for Dr David Chengelis.  Check out my profile too. I just came across this site for OH and found this thread.  I too had Dr. Chengelis.  He is absolutely WONDERFUL.  I had to go thru the Weight Control Center, but they weren't pushing for Dr. Krause.

I had my surgery in November 2010.  I have lost 170 pounds with 12 being just recently after having skin removal surgery.  I'm much happier and healthier than I've ever been.  It's a wonderful feeling and yet so foreign at the same time.  I went from a size 26/28 and am now in a size 6 - 8.  It's awesome.  Since surgery, I have run three 5K races (which my first one was just shy of my one year anniversary of surgery) and I ran a 10K race just recently.  My goal now is to run a 1/2 marathon.  My plan is NEVER to go back.  I pray that with this forum I will find new support to add to my support system.

Dr Krause did my surgery in 2003 and he saved my life.  I went to the Weight Loss Center in Royal Oak for support groups and I used there dietcian.  They were all wonderful. Best of luck                                                     Robin

My surgeon was Dr Krause. I went through the entire Beaumont progarm. From initial meeting to surgery, it was about 4 months. Awesome surgeon, awesome hospital, awesome follow-up. I highly recommend the Beaumont program and Dr. Krause. Do not hesitate to ask me anything. Best of luck, Sheryl

I belong to the Beaumont weight loss center.  If you decide to go there, I would love to meet you at their gym or go with you to support meetings. I have belonged for 6 months, now I am pushing for the surgery.  I have been losing weight with their program and love the staff there. Lorie

Hey Lorie, I know you said you have been with the hospital for 6 months but my question is how long would someone have to go threw the program before then can have the surgery or is it different for everybody?

The process is different for everyone.  I have blue cross and needed the monthly supervised diet.  I also have a bmi of 39, so I need comorbidities.  I have an appointment next week, my sixth one, I am gonna push for the surgery now! Lorie

The process at beaumont depends on your BMI and your insurance guidelines. They have a seminar every 2nd Tuesday at 4PM to explain. I just started there this month. I need to start my preliminary testing, and then I meet the surgeon. My BMI is 51.8 so I don't have t do the weightloss program first. Shug

How fast you complete the program depends on you.  The Patient Coordinator says that most people will take 3-4 months.  I met all the requirements in 6 weeks.  According to the PC, the fastest person to do it took 4 weeks.

You cannot skip certain portions of the qualifiers for surgery.  The meeting with the psychologist, for example, will tell them whether you are depressed, and what your mental state is.

The more committed you are, the faster you will go.

BTW, a heartily recommend Beaumont, Dr. Krause and the Weight Loss Center - I tell people I had the "super bypass".  No complications and was back to work in a week.
