Is there not a surgeon in or close to Grand Rapids that accepts medicaid? I am astonished at how we are the 2nd largest city in the state and yet no surgeon here accepts medicaid. I have search for several weeks, calling about 50 different offices, all of the hospitals and nothing. I will travel if I have to, but I have a 4 month old and 2 other children that depend on me and I can't be traveling back and forth and such all the time. Not to mention I don't exactly have the gas money. I mean what's the point in Medicaid covering this procedure and issuing to people if there isn't even a doctor close to them to perform the procedure in the first place. I am a pretty optimistic person, but I am at my witts end and am just falling apart now!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you
Lacey

Actually, I have spend down - which means I can't get a healthy plan like priority. I pay a certain amount - which I am prepared to pay. However, no on in GR accepts this form of medicaid. Also, I did make an appt with a place as recommended in Flint, and it was through many conversations on the phone that I found out that it is almost 100% certain that unless you are obese with health issues you won't be approved for any type of medical weight loss surgery.
I am obese, but I am healthy. I have low BP, no signs of diabetes or any other health issues. I do have PCOS, but that is not enough to qualify me for surgery. So the bottom line is - I get to stay obese.
Good luck to anyone who can get on with their lives!
Tomorrow is another day and I am trying my best - that's all I can do!

It seems I remember this being the case.
I think it may depend on your BMI. And your comorbidities.
They go by the standards.
You can call the provider on your insurance certificate(card) and request the criteria for WLS that they require and what you must do to comply. They may also have a list of accepting profiders.
One is Henry Ford Hospital Wyndote MI.
If you call this center and ask to talk to the insurance person she can tell you the ins and outs. too.
