Hello.. I am 7 weeks out yesterday and I cannot get in all my fluids.  I get in about 32oz and of course suppose to get in 64oz.  I called my surgeons office and the nurse suggested I start using a straw to get more in.  Now, this struck me funny becuase I was told NOT to use a straw.  I guess I will have to ask Monday when I go to my six week check up ( that is actually 7.5 weeks).  Do any of you, use a straw??  What were you told about using a straw?  Thanks in advanced!!

According to the nutrition program at Hurley in Flint we can start using straws after the 6 week mark.  She said that straws actually help you to bring in less air than sipping from a cup but to just be careful not to suck liquids too quickly through a straw. Remember - every program is different and have different guidelines.  They are learning new things as often as we are.  My mom and sister had their surgery through Hurley 4 and 6 years ago (respectively) and they were both told no straws.  So, they must have learned something new and now allow it.  HTH Pam

I was just going to say that... I was told the same at about 6 weeks I could start using a straw.  I find i get less air through a straw than through a glass, and I think i get in more liquid which has helped me soo much because I was just barely fighting off dehydration!

I would not use a straw because you get nasty gas bubbles of air when drinking with a straw and they hurt,    I would recommend sipping water and have a bottle with you all the time.  Tricia

Interesting I know that Barix also says no staws again as everyone else is saying to many bubbles. Sip Sip Sip... Is what I have also was heard. And keep water with you at all times

I always thought it was funny that Barix told us not to use straws, but the 32 oz mug they give you has a straw with it.

Hmmm...I have used a straw since 2 weeks out.  I had used a straw for YEARS and could not drink normal out of a glass without getting way too much air. No adverse effects for me.

I started using a straw at about 2 months out and have had no issues with it.  I'm able to get more water in using a straw. I would give it a try and see how it goes.  Jenn

People and their thinkings on things with wls is quite funny sometimes.  No straws never ever - ROFL!!!!!!

I've been using a straw for a long long time and have had no ill effects of it at all. No air bubbles, no burpings, nothing!!

I say if your nurse told you to use a straw I'd go for it (slowly at first). I tend to drink more with a straw then when I drink right out of the bottle.
