Why did you decide on the sleeve?
Hi
I went to a seminar held by MMPC in Grand Rapids. Before I walked in, I "knew" the only posible surgery for me was the band. I listened to the seminar with a special ear toward the band...100% convinced. I set up my first appointments, first with one of the doctors (not surgeons) at MMPC. I told her I was sure I wanted the band. She suggested that it may not afford as much weight loss as I need. It didn't sway me. Then I spoke with Dr Kemmeter at MMPC. He recommended the sleeve for me. He explained the details, and suggested I come here, to OH to get more information. The more I learned, the more I wavered. After doing al the research, listening to the VSG board, asking questions, etc,. I decided that the sleeve would be the best for me. I know I would not be really good about messing to get the right fill on the band, I really didn't care for the idea of a foreign body in mine, and then I found out about the port (guess I just didn't know enough about it before I made my first decision) I was completely sure I wanted the sleeve. Add to that, the problems many have seen with the band (many lap-band posters on the VSG site going for a revision to the sleeve), I was made up my mind for the sleeve. I never considered the RNY because I have anemia and IBS, and I just didn't want my intestines rerouted.
I will have my surgery onthe 29th. It took me months to fight for my insurance to cover it, but I am that sure-willing to fight for it. I could have had the RNY or band right away, but I chose to fight for what I know is best for me.
There are people who are very happy with their procedure, whatever it is. You have to make the decision of what is right for you.
Good luck to you. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Hi Martha,
Thanks for answering my message. I feel the same way you do. The more I look into this the more I am leaning to the sleeve. I am getting very excited now that I have made my decision to have the surgery.
What hospital are you going to? Spectrum? If I have my choice I will choose them. I am very difficult to intebate d/t a congenital defect in my trach and I found that they have great anesthesists.
I wish you a speedy recovery. Can't wait to pick your brain!
Carole
Thank you and ask away, Carole.
I am really excited, but also getting anxious and a bit nervous. Only 6 more days.
I am going to Spectrum Blodgett Campus. It has a whole Bariatric section, with special furnishings and equipment. I understand it is very comfortable, and wonderful staffing. with experience dealing with bariatrics. My hubby is staying with me, so I am sure that will help, too. They have been really wondefful so far, and really accomodating. Please feel free to ask me anything. I have been on this road since March, and I think I have had my hands on just about every piece of information out there!
Have you been to vsgfaq? It is a wealth of info! Take care, Martha
