Hello Everyone! I just wanted to breifly introduce myself! I am married, 25 and live in Michigan. I am hoping to have WLS in Jan (but possibly Feb.), but am torn between 2 procedures...LapBand and Sleeve Gastrectomy. I am leaning towards the sleeve, but my biggest issue is that I want so badly to get pregnant, and am wondering if it's safe to be pregnant with the sleeve? I know the band is OK with all the fluid let out. I have been TTC for almost 2 years, and am hopful that after I loose the weight, my body will give me the OK to get pregnant!  I have about 100-110 poiunds to lose. Any and all suggestions would be a HUGE help! Thanks, and have a great weekend! (I had to post this b/c I think it's hilarious!) I look forward to "meeting" many of you.

How long have they really been doing the sleeve as I remember not that many years. I would long and hard before  at that operation because you still wanting pregnancy. I am sure that it is still possible. I am not sure they have the long term data. They other issue with the sleeve it what happens if you ever need a it reveresed. 20 years from now... Lets say you or anyone get some type of cancer and now the stomach has been removed. Then what ? Something to think about

Hi I, too have about 120 lbs to lose, and I will be getting my sleeve on Nov 29th.  I was set on the lapband, but my doc suggested I look into the sleeve.  He thinks it is better for me because of the amount of weight I have to lose.  After educating myself, I decided it was right for me. I don't particularly like the idea of a foreign body in me and I know myself in as I would not be really good about futzing with the fill "level" until I got it right. According to the "official" band site, 25% of band patients wind up having the band removed. They also statea 88% rate of some kind of complication--although to be fair, that number may be better now. I fought hard for my sleeve (I could have had a band or RNY right away, but my insurance needed coaxing) There was a big summit in New York late last month, and the consensus is good.  The longest released studies are 3 years out, and a 5 year study on a similar operation (Magnestrasse and Mills) is available.  Also, people have been getting gastrectomies for years and years.  There is someone on the VSG site whose mother had a gastrectomy somehting like 10 years ago, and wound up losing weight (and keeping it off!) even though that wasn't the reason for the operation.  I don't know if Dr Baker does them, but Drs Foote and Kemmeter do.  Bottom line is, you have to do your homework, read, read, read and talk to your doctor--then make the decision that is right FOR YOU.  Good luck. You should wait a year at least after WLS before getting pregnant. kp

Welcome Hopefull,     I had RNY last Feb; and so did my gal pal. Anyway she ended up preger's only 5 months in by accident; she and baby are doing fine. I am sure you will be able to have a baby whatever WLS you chose. Also had a sister inlaw had WLS over 10 year ago; and now has two healthy children. And yes they say wait at least a year! Good luck, Hugs, Judy R

Hey Katie...I had the RNY.. Only because I did not want the fuss of all the fills of the band, (and I have a lot of weight to lose and wanted it gone faster than what the band could give me) I did not choose the Sleeve because I wanted something that could possible be reversed if need be.  With the sleeve the thought of over half my stomach being cut out scared the crap out of me!  But just talk to Dr Baker and he will suggest what is the best and go from there.  That is what Dr Foote did for me, and I chose what one I wanted.  I wish you luck in what ever you choose.  :O)  The most important thing is.. that you are doing something to help you get healthy...
