MMPC patients--advise??

Hi All

Any recommendations on the bariatrix diet?  I have tried a few things, and I found that I could live with the taste, but the consistency is horrible—like wallpaper paste!  I couldn't even get through half the oatmeal substance.  How in the world am I going to be able to eat this post op?  Any advise? I will start on the diet on the 15th- so I will be on it for Thanksgiving.  That is gonna suck. I am still cooking, but only the bird.  The rest of the family will bring everything else. I know that this sounds like I am whining (well, I guess I AM), but I am thrilled to be going through this journey!

Thanks

Martha

Dr. K's office provides you with foods/drinks to get you through the 2-week diet.  Are these products the ones you have tried?  I did not try the oatmeal, heck didn't even know they offered oatmeal. I really liked the spagetti and chili pre-op.  And the protein bars.  They were my treat every night!  The cream of broccoflower soup was pretty good and I could stomach the cream of mushroom soup.  My advice...stay away from the cream of chicken and the chicken noodle soup.  Yucko! Don't worry about post op at this point.  You will just do what you have to do.  You won't care what your eating/drinking for the first couple of weeks because you really won't want anything.  At least I didn't.  Not even hungry. Good luck with your journey.  I hope you like Dr. K and his staff as well as I do.  Can't wait to go back there to weigh in!  lol  11 more days! Anna

Remember, Thanksgiving is not about the food, it's about spending time with your family.  When they are eating, you should eat also.  I had two family picnics during my pre-op period.  I just ate when they ate.  Felt a little funny, but everyone understood and was very supportative.

As for the food.  I didn't think it was that bad.  Keep thinking that.   I;m not a fruit juice drinker, so I sould make sugar free jello using the fruit juice as my cold water.  The first week I could eat the whole box.  The second week - maybe 1/2   Sugar free popsicles saved my late night ice cream cravings. Also, I was not satsified with the soup.  Hungry right away afterwards.  I ended up eating two packets at once.  Seemed to work.   Final advise - remember, it's only two weeks.  After surgery you don't feel like eating anyway. So that two weeks was no big deal for me.

Martha, I bought a lot of the carnation s/f breakfast packets to get me through the first two weeks post-op.  Much better tasting and easier to get down.  I of course checked with the dietician at mmpc first to get the okay.  I also remember the 1st thanksgiving after surgery and I really didn't miss the over eating.  I still made the pies and all the food for the family.  You will make it through this just fine!

Martha----I have done the MMPC 12 week "fast" twice. Here's what I learned and heard in my support group meetings. 1.  There are a lot of products.  Try different ones and if you don't care for them. Keep them for a while just in case you get sick of something else.  Sometimes you can go back and end up liking what you hated to begin with. 2.  I liked the pre-made chocolate and vanilla drinks best, next to the bars of course :-), they are more expensive, but worth the money.  Plus there's no mess.  I can imagine that post op you would immediately discard the straw they come with!!! 3.  Check with Dr. Kemmeter on this one--it may be different for the pre/post OP vs the 12 week fast-some people have tried the "meals" with a little seasoning.  Some added salsa to the spaghetti and chili.  AGAIN NOT SURG PATIENTS!!! 4.  I always liked my drinks almost frozen.  Don't freeze them completely.  If you take them from the fridge and put them in the freezer for a few minutes they get a little icy.  Don't forget about them in the freezer!!!  I did open up the carton once and ate it  with a spoon.  Not bad!

5.  I love your description of the oatmeal!  I feel the same way.  From my experience--You either like it or HATE it!  Best wishes with everything! Laura

Thanks, Laura.  I love the freeaing suggestion! Great change of pace.  I was thinking I could live off the bars, but I'm guessing they might have something to say about that!

I lived on the pre mixed chocolate shakes.  I couldn't stand the pudding/shake mix.  You will find that everyone has different tastes so my advice is to get the sample pack.  It's $20 for a huge amount of stuff.  That way you can figure out ahead of time what you can tolerate.  I was just one month post op at Thanksgiving last year.  I tried to focus on what I could have and how much my life was going to change for the better.  It was the best Thanksgiving I've ever had.  Also, my husband was on the 2 week liquid diet for the Christmas holiday.  His surgery was on Dec. 28th.  That was truly hard on him since the season lasts so much longer.  He made it through with no problems and so will you! Congrats on your surgery date!

Thanks all for the info!

I thought about the Instant Breakfast and regular SF jello, but I didn’t know how strict they are about sticking to the Bariatrix stuff.  I know it is low fat and really high protein, but I didn’t know if that is the only reason they want you on it. If it just to lose weight and have high protein, I can do that—especially if I can subsidize the yukky stuff.

I got the sample bag and am working through it, but I don’t think I will be able to get to all of it before I have to make my choices. I am doing well, and have lost 34 pounds since I started this, so I am okay with not overeating for Thanksgiving, just wondering how I will be able to smell the bird cooking all day, and then not even taste it!

Thanks for all the help!

Martha

Hi, I stirred some sugar free maple syrup in the oatmeal so I could tolerate it.

You can make it .

I put Splenda Brown Sugar in the oatmeal with apples and it worked really well when I did the 12 week fast.  I could go the rest of my entire life without the chili or spaghetti!!!  The ready made drinks and bars are worthwhile and I could stomach the chicken broth and chicken noodle if I added more water than recommended.  It is only two weeks and you can do it!!
Smile.....Everyone will wonder what you have been up to!!
