cold and cough

I am scheduled for surgery Monday, October 1st.  Yesterday I started with a runny nose and a cough from the drainage.  They said if I am not better by Friday I will have to reschedule my surgery!  I understand why but I will just be so disappointed.  Did anyone else have a slight cold prior to surgery?

Wendy, Hi.  I lived in Redford for 42 years, now in Livonia.  Try to push a lot of vitamin C.  Drink a lot of fluids.  I really don't think they do surgery when you have a cold.  What hospital are you going to?

Get better and prayers for you.

I am going to U OF M.  I am better today then I was yesterday so maybe by Friday I will be a lot better or maybe just wishful thinking.  I know they will do what is best for me but I don't want to have to re arrange everything at work etc.  I have been taking a lot of vitamin C and garlic.  I swear by the garlic.  Thanks for answering. Where abouts did you live in Redford? I live in the south end for 29 years. w

Hey Wendy, Get yourself some Zycam nasal swabs....I use them every time one of us is sick.  It seems to cut down the cold to just a couple of days.  They aren't cheap, but IMHO they are so worth it. Trust in Bill....he'll let you know if you need to reschedule or not.  U of M is a great place to have surgery!  (The admin. assistant is terrific!) I hope you get over your cold and can keep  your date.  I know how hard it is to rearrange things. Keep us posted! Brenda

Wendy,

I sorry this is happening to you, but you really don't want to go into this surgery coughing, and sneezing.   I had to postpone my surgery for about 3 weeks, and get a clearance from my PCP.  I had had bronchitis/asthma since right after my  consult.  My PCP told me that the only thing that would get rid of the cough fast was prednizone and he didn't want to give it to me when I first got the cough.  He did give it to me when they cancelled the surgery.

I know of others who've had colds and went to surgery and were miserable for a while after.

I had mine open, 18 mths ago, and I'm just now able to cough as deep as I could before the surgery.
