WOW am I just full of questions these past few "hours".... I'm struggling here to figure out what the differance is between the two.  I have googled it, and cannot seem to figure it out.  Could someone explain to me in lamens (sp?) terms??   My surgeon is Dr Foote.  Does he do one or the other? Or depend on the patient.  I dont recall him stating to me what one he was going to do, so I thought maybe he only performed one kind. Feed back is greatly appreciate!! Thanks again and again and again.... Jodi :O)

These terms refer to the amount (length) of intestine bypassed. I don’t think there’s a standard everyone agrees on, but roughly a proximal is 50 -150cm of bypassed intestine, and distal is anything over 150cm. The more bypassed the more malabsortion, so usually distals are reserved for patients with a very high BMI.

Hope this helps  Denise
