My hubby and I both had RNY in December, different doctors.  He had an appointment with his nut . today.  She told him with the way he was excerising he needed about 90g of protein a day.  That was fine.  Then she told him it all had to be from solid food.  No liquid protein.  Why didn't she just say please over eat.  It makes about as much sense as noting.  Could some one please explain this logic to me.  I wish I had gone with him.  I would have seriously questioned this womans credentials. Ninety grams of protein a day from solid food........why did he bother having RNY...he is going to over fill his pouch on a regular basis with that much food. Should I call this woman and ask her what she was thinking? He has been losing great and all his blood work came back great.  In fact so great he is now totally off insulin!  That was his last medication, of 6 he was on (including 3 different insulins).

It's just a different school of thinking. I personally couldnt eat 90g of protein a day now, and I'm 27 mths out!! I've done the malnutrition thing and the PIC line thing and artificial food thing - it's NOT fun!!!  If I have to drink 30 - 60 grams of protein a day to keep my levels up then I'm more then willing to do it regarless of what ANYONE has to say about it. I will say though, it does get easier as you get further out. I know really only consistantly drink one protein drink per day, down from three when I was sick.  Bottom line - you've got to do whatever it takes to keep yourself healthy. I'd suggest having a heart to heart with the surgeon himself and see what he suggests too.

It's actually pretty easy to get the protein from solid foods.  3 oz of deli turkey is 19 grams of protein, 3 oz of steak is 24 grams of protein, 3 oz of tuna is 39 grams of protein.  If you use a program to keep up with your foods, it's very easy to see where your protein levels are instead of guessing.  I do add 1 scoop of anywhey (17 grams) just to get my protein to the 90 level.  The reason the NUT doesn't want you drinking your protein is that it goes through you very fast and you're hungry quicker.  I always hear to think of your pouch like a funnel.  Watery items run through quickly while solids last longer.

I agree with you.   I'm two years out and haven't done a protein drink in over a year.  Occasionally, I'll eat a south beach bar if I need a quick snack or something.  I get all my protein in through food.  I don't overeat.  I eat A LOT of meat. But I've been able to eat meat very easily....early on.  I am also allergic to milk, so whey based protein powders were out.  I did soy for a while, but was able to get my protein in through my food at around 6 months out.  I'm just very mindful of what I eat.  I do strive to eat as much protein first.   Trust me, I'm not always that diligent...lol!   My blood work has been fine since day one, so it really depends on the individual.
