My hubby was told once by a woman he worked with that had RNY that she was taking a prescription medication for the gas she had.  Does anyone know what it might have been.  I have tried everything I can find OTC.  I swear my gas is sssoooooo bad the government could use me as a secret weapon and win the war no problem..  My kids joke about....I took my Mom to a farting contest and she won no problem.  Honestly think it was I killed he judges with the smell and there was no one left to judge.  PLEASE HELP ME!!!! Hugs, Lori

You can get some over the counter stuff called devrom. Inner mint works too. But,,, these things take all the fun out of it. kp

I didn't have the flatulence issues until I got about 8 months out.  Ed and I have contests now.  I used to get so mad at him because it always seemed like he waited until we were in a small, closed room, or in the car to let 'em rip.  Sometimes his green gases follow him into the car or house, even if he does it outside.   Now that this very creepy problem has become an issue for me, I decided to get him back, but unfortunately, Ed can't smell.  Lost that sense from having his nose broken so many times when he played hockey as a kid.  So I just retreat to my room so as not to offend anyone else in the house. I have experimented with my diet to isolate the foods that make things worse and as much as I hate to say it, I have to drop the milk.  It just messes me all up.  I know I can use the pills to add the lactase enzyme but that takes the satisfaction out of drinking a nice cold glass.  Lactaid milk is good but just not the same. Fruit and vegetable skins do it to me also.  So I peel everything.  I had about 12 grapes one day and almost called my surgeon.  I was miserable for 4 days.  Raisins make me hurl so those are out too.  I can do corn but in very small amounts.  It gasses me up alot too.  Eggs are bad, so I stick to the whites....the yolks contain all the fat and sulfur, which causes the gas.  The white is where all the protein is anyways. We buy the International Delight liquid coffee creamer...Sugar Free.  That just about kills me so I use the cheapest powder creamers I can find. When I get the flatulence at work, I have an easy way to be discreet...I am currently a grill cook so I just back up to the grill where the exhaust fans are overhead...Voila!  It gets drawn right up and out the vents!  Too funny because all of my co-workers know what I am up to when they see me standing there with that goofy look on my face. Gas is just one of those unavoidable side effect of this new life we have.  I'm good as long as it's *voidable*!   KathyG

Kevin, it actually feels great to know that I can rip one out with the best of them...and you are the best! I have found out that even one done under the covers still gets out and pentrates the air....

I had the duodenal switch, and we DS'ers can get kinda gassy.    I am assuming the same foods make you gassy too - simple carbs and sugars.    I can control mine pretty well through diet, but there are just some times when a girl's gotta eat what she's gotta eat (last night it was wonderful homemade bread dipped in olive oil) so I've been burning candles at home ever since. Many DS'ers go on Flagyl - an antibiotic - that kills off the bacteria in your intestines that cause the gas.   That might be what your husband's friend is on.  They go on a lower dose than what a doc might prescribe for someone with c. difficile, a severe bacterial infection of the intestine.   I prefer not to use antibiotics for something other than a true infection, and I have had good luck using probiotics, which are found in health food stores.  The best ones are the ones that you will find in the refrigerated section of the store.   They are not terribly cheap, but I get them for a much lower price on vitacost.com.  I get a lot of my vits and Power Crunch bars from there.  Some DS'ers have found that just eating Activa, the new yogurt with acidopholus (a probiotic) has helped.  Fennel tea has also been surprisingly helpful too, an old european remedy for gas and colic, etc. Good luck!

Hey- I went on a cruise with an RNY'er this summer - not only did we eat about the same quantity of food, she matched me fart for fart!   I might have had her a bit on the...errrr...pungency though, LOL.
