Re: taking Prevacid
Are you taking it for an ulcer or just as a precautionary measure? I still have to take mine, but the majority of my pouch is an ulcer. I think that might make a difference. It is kind of gross, but it doesn't last too long, so I live with it. Good luck and I hope you don't have to take it for too long.

The pre surgery endoscopy determined gastritis and they put me on Aciphex. Prevacid and carafate and Tums for a month or so after surgery. Tums switched to calcium citrate, carafate went away when the pouch healed but I had gastritis again and am now back on Prevacid. Looks like I'll be on it for keeps, better than ulcers.
But I take a capsule, and took Protonics in the hospital (they didn't have Prevacid) in capsule form as well. Nothing nasty under the tongue. Ask if the capsules are okay for you!
I was put on Prevacid right out of surgery as a preventive measure. At first I was on the Solu-Tab, which to me, was very pleasant tasting, compared to opening a capsule and trying to get the powder down. EWWW! That early out, capsules were too large. When my surgeon increased my dose to twice daily, I found out my insurance would only pay for 30 of the Solu-Tabs a month, and trying to pay for them myself was too much. These things are about $3-$4 for each tab! I was put on the capsule finally, and I have no problems taking it. If I don't take it, the pain is pretty bad. Good Luck.

Hi, Dr. Krause is my surgeon as well. I believe we have to be on the Prevacid for 6-12 months. I think its a little nasty myself, especially when it gets gritty at the end. I was told that we can swallow pills that are smaller than an M&M so what I have been doing is suck on it until it shrinks a bit then swallow it with a sip of liquid. The directions on the medication say that you can do that. Hope that helps it go down a little easier for you.
