for the wine drinkers, how did wine affect you after the surgery? i know it's high in calorie, but my son is coming home from turkey this weekend and we are having a big celebration. he has been in europe for 5 yrs in the USAF. i hope to be able to have a few glasses without getting sick.  thanks

I have been out 4 years and 1 glass of wine still makes me loopy.  So you can drink it, just use caution, drink slowly and be aware of how it is affecting you.  Also remember that alcohol stays with you longer.  Have fun and enjoy your sons homecoming.  GO USAF!!!!! and tell your son "THANKS" for serving.

I was told no drinking for a least a year if at all.  You are not that far out from surgery yet are you? They say it can damage your liver because it goes through you so much faster. You can also get an ulcer or dehydrate you.  One benefit is you will be a cheap date because it goes through your system so fast you get drunk really fast.

I'm banded so it's different, but I feel the effects of alcohol WAY quicker - mostly because I don't have a lot of food in my system. It still gets absorbed the same. I went out the other night and had 2 martinis and was pretty LIT!

You may want to try a little wine before the event (see how it affects you in the privacy of your own home...LOL).  I'm nearly 2 years out and wine hits me very quickly.  I had my first glass of wine after surgery at about 3 months, on my anniversary.  You'll hear lots of opinions on this....but you gotta do what you think is best for you.  I do drin****asionally....a drink or two...that's more than enough!  Congrats on your son's return home!  Tina

For me it is not that it hits me so fast.. it is that the sugar hits me faster than the alcohol.  I actually can no longer get a buzz or drunk because I have to drink so slowly.  I get horrible stomach cramps, sweats and shaky if I drink too fast (from the high sugar).  I would take other poster's advice and try it out before going out.  That is what I did and I was glad that I did, because I would have been feeling awful in the middle of the restaraunt otherwise... Hope you have a great homecoming and enjoy your time with your son.

thanks for all the input. i tried a glass tonight, had to drink it so slow that it didnt even affect me. guess that's a good thing.

also, thanks so  much for the kind words for my son. he has been in italy for 3 yrs, then went straight to turkey for 2 yrs. it is going to be a sweet homecoming, i get to have my grandbaby for a full month.

I know you'll give a him a big hug, but also give him a big THANK YOU from me.  My hubby was in the army for 12 years...a Desert Storm vet.  A "thank you" means so much!  Enjoy your family!  Tina
