Just came home from my psych evaluation
Hi Donna,
I too had acid reflux and boarderline high blood pressure and I had high choleseral I had the gastric bypass surgery in september and am off all my medications except my sleep meds. I choose the bypass surgery because of who I was. I loved junk food, fast foods, sweets, I knew with the bypass surgery I would not be able to eat them at all. (I do have one taco from taco bell every two weeks) I have been off my reflux meds since the surgery. Have never felt better, no reflux . I was just about the same weight but I was a little taller 5' 8.5 so far I have lost 65 pounds since sept. 12 . Already went from a size 24 to a 16 already, shirts were 2x and now get to buy shirts in a large no x's I only tell you this to encougage you decied if this is right for you. You may get alot of family or friends that do not agree with you and they will probaly voice their opions very stongly. My husband was very much against it but now thanks for me for having the courage to go through with it.
Do you have any support group meetings in your area I dont recall seeing where you were from. I attend one in Holland and they have been such a great help with everything . I honestly feel this surgery saved my life I feel so much better everyday . Keep asking questions Learn as much as you can

Thanks for your info Ann. I am definitely leaning more towards the RNY procedure over the lapband procedure. From what I'm learning, it would definitely be the more effective way to go. Congratulations on your progress !!! I can't wait until I can say the same things. Yes, there is support group meetings in my area, at Wyandotte Hospital, on the 4th Tuesday of each month. I plan on attending my first support group meeting on Jan. 23rd.
Thanks Again,
Donna in Riverview
I chose RNY for same reasons - - I knew I needed the restriction that lap-band would not have offered. I know it was the right decision for me but only you can decide for yourself. Anyway, I also had a pretty bad case of GERD before surgery and hoped to be rid of that problem after my RNY bypass. No such luck - - I was okay until I started eating actual food and then it came back in full force. I'm still taking Protonix every day but it is not a bother considering all the other things that have improved since surgery. I've lost 75 pounds, I no longer have high cholesterol, and my heel-spur/plantar faciitis problems are greatly improved. Life's good.
my bypass was the best thing i ever did for myself, BUT it did nothing to cure my acid reflux. I still have to take prevacid every day. but everything else is better. my blood pressure was high since i was 26 years old and i was taking four pills a day, within two weeks of my surgery and only dropping 30lbs... my blood pressure was normalized, i've never had to take another blood pressure pill and it's almost always 120/80 or better.
