protein shakes again....
I am on a search for a thread about protein shakes....instead of asking everyone's opinion again. What one taste better and where do I get them. I live in Westland. I don't like lemon flavor..but love strawberry, raspberry, orange and grape.....on a regular listing. I need to find one that is totally tolerable...I gag so easy. But maybe after surgery and not eating so much...it will taste like a little bit of heaven...lol
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
How Close are you to Barix in Ypsi?

I personally dont care for the Nectar fruity flavored protein drinks. When I want a supplement, I normally use the unflavored AnyWhey or Vanilla Isopure powder. I just add my scoops of protein powder into my handy smoothie blender thingie or shaker cup....add a cup of coffee and flavor it up with splenda or a splash of flavored creamer...and blend away. The unflavored can be mixed with just about anything and still taste good.
For a change of pace - I use the same powders but toss in a few pieces of frozen fruit, some fat-free half & half for a creamier taste, a packet or two of Splenda into the same blender and whizz away. A nice yummy good for you ice creamy treat.
Its all about your particular tastes and what you can tolerate after surgery. My mom likes thicker drinks so will use protein powders such as Carb Solutions to make her drinks with. I personally cant stand the thicker drinks...so thats why I like the ones that mix like water....easier to drink and get down faster.
I ordered my AnyWhey online....just checked out a few different sites and compared pricing. I cant recall the exact name but whatever was the cheapest with shipping included is where I got it from. The Isopure Vanilla..they also have Chocolate last I checked, I purchased at Meijers. I probably could of got it cheaper online but I didnt have to consider shipping so just grabbed it.
Hope this is in line of what you were asking about. I know I can run on a tangent sometimes. lol
I am glad you posted this actually. I don't have a date yet but wanted to start "taste testing" some protein shakes before hand. I am setting myself up for not ever being able to eat chocolate again (my biggest downfall now) so I don't want a shake that is chocolate flavor. That way I will hopefully never be tempted to eat chocolate again, I HOPE! I'll have to try those fruit ones tho ! ~~Rona
I think it's best to order a sample pack online, then you'll know what you like as far as texture and taste.
I use unflavored AnyWhey, which I get at the Vitamin Shoppe on Warren across from the mall. I mix it with a few Tablespoons of Dannon Smoothie Strawberry and it's not bad.
I also mix the AnyWhey in sf hot chocolate, it's really good.

Hi Deborah. This is worth repeating for any about-to-be newbies. 99% of the time your tastes change a LOT after surgery. So stick to trying flavours and brands, but don't rush out and buy a boatload of them because after WLS you may think they taste like gack. If you find some you like, save a couple of samples to try after you have WLS...then if you still like them, go for it. I found I love Unjury (see Unjury.com) they are fabulous people to work with and they do have samples. Sometimes having a chocolate protein drink saves you from going crazy with chocolate withdrawal. People have found when they have chocolate cravings that they think they will try a bit of sugar-free chocolate...they also get lots of gas and the runs. Chocolate protein will not do that to you. I have the chocolate Unjury every morning, mixed with very hot tap water. It is terrific hot chocolate and has no lactose intolerance issues. Their vanilla is good and the strawberry is one of the few fake strawberries that I can tolerate. They also have an unflavoured one that goes into anything cold or warm (not boiling or baked). It is great in any flavour yogurt and mixes well into chili. Good luck and happy holidays.

The protien shakes I had to do pre op, were the absolute best, if you are looking for one to mix with water. HMR (Health Management Resources) is a supplement offered through hosptals and health care providers. www.hackleyhealthmanagement.com, they will let you purchase online. I took the HMR70 for my three week pre op liquid diet, as directed by my program. I still use these when I am on the go, as they mix smooth and creamy with water (Chocolate) or crystal light (Vanilla) for some flavor variations, and are in convenient packets. You can also make the into a pudding with less water. When I mix shakes at home, I use GNC 100% Whey Chocolate, and add it to my coffee for a great cappacinno.
